“Where does the problem lie? Is it Holden that is sick or is it the culture which he seems to observe as an outsider? When events in our life cause us to step back and take a wider perspective, do we temporarily gain a truer vision of the disturbing whole, until we can be brought back into the fold, or does this state of mind simply represent something that needs to be healed? Others may disagree but I think these are the questions that are raised by this book, and they are the reason it is an recommended read.
As a side note I don't know why this is required reading in high school or below, I don't think 1 in 10 would understand it enough to get much out of it.
