    • All her life, Anna ishas been used as a 13 and is starting to make some big life decisions. Her decisions are not just about herself but they aredonor for her sister and herself. Her sisterolder sister, Kate. Kate was diagnosed with a rare kindform of cancer at age two. Anna's parents had Anna be "specialy" made so thatleukemia when she was 2, and the only hope of survival was to have a donor. Since no one in the family was a match, and waiting for a donor could take too long, Brian and Sara decided to have another child, and make sure the child was a donor. Thus, Anna was born. What started out as one simple procedure turned into a long, complicated history of Anna undergoing operations and hospitalizations, just to save her sisters life.sister. When KatesAnna's parents want her to donate a kidney failedto her sister, Anna finally puts her foot down. Hiring a lawyer, Anna demands medical emancipation from her parents, but things aren't as easy as a simple lawsuit. Anna finds herself slowly becoming estranged form her family hadmother, as Sara thinks Anna is being selfish and crying out for attention. But Brian starts to make a big decisonrealize that could save or kill Kate. During all this mess thereperhaps Anna is another child namedright, and takes her side on this, which only tears the family apart more. Brian and Sara have always been so focused on Kate, and Anna through Kate, that they don't realize their son, Jesse thatis inbeing neglected. He becomes a delinquent, causing trouble everywhere, which only adds to the pain of the family.

      Through it all, Campbell, Anna's lawyer, struggles with his own problems. His old girlfriend, Julia, is working on the law everydaycase as a guardian ad litem-- someone to counsel Anna, and help the judge make a decision about what's right. Julia and Campbell dated in the past, and things ended abruptly when Campbell left Julia. Although Campbell stills has feelings for her, and she for him, things are tense, and they struggle to work together.

      Anna keeps on wavering back and forth about her decision to sue her parents for medical emancipation or not, and Campbell grows frustrated. Eventually, the case comes to court, and Campbell tells Anna that she has to add more confusion.testify. Anna is terrified of doing so, but eventually, reluctantly agrees to do so. When she gets on the stand, she's asked why she decided to stop being a donor for Kate. The truth finally comes out, and Anna reveals that Kate asked her to stop being a donor, and not undergo the kidney transplant. Kate had even tried to kill herself, because she didn'twas so tired of living on borrowed time. Anna realized that Kate was willing to die, if it meant giving Anna a chance to finally live. Anna talks about when she told Kate she wouldn't be her donor anymore. Anna thinks about how "She turned to me with all the world in her eyes, and a smile that crumbled like howa fault line." She then tells the judge that Kate thanked her for stopping.

      Sara has a hard time believing this, and when it's her parents were treatingturn to testify, Sara explains her so she wentdecisions for favoring Kate over Anna. She says how if a child was a trapped in a burning building, the parent was practically expected to go in and suedsave them. Anna wonBut in Sara's case, Kate was trapped in the trial. That nightburning building, and Anna was killedthe only one who knew the way in. She knew that she risked losing both of them, but she didn't dare do nothing. She had to at least try.

      After deliberating, the judge rules in Anna's favor, and declares her medically emancipated form her parents, with Campbell responsible until she turns 18. On the way back from the courthouse, Anna gets into a terrible car crash. Her lawyer was appointed byaccident. Brian arrives on the scene as a paramedic, not knowing it's his daughter in the judgecar. He's distraught, and Anna is rushed to helpthe hospital. At the hospital, the doctor informs Brian and Sara that while a machine is keeping Anna breathing and her make any big medical decisions. He decidedheart beating, she is brain dead. While there is nothing that can be done to save one girls lifeAnna, a kidney transplant could still save Kate's life. Anna's kidney is given to Kate, and Sara and Brian turn off the machine that is whatkeeps Anna breathing.

      An epilogue takes place many years later. Kate describes how things have changed. The kidney transplant saved her life, something which doctor's couldn't quite explain. But Kate thinks it's because someone had to go, and Anna was implyingtook her place. Kate says that Jesse cleaned up his act, and recently got a commendation from the mayor for his help in a drug bust. Campbell and Julia got married, but didn't stay in theirtouch, because even when they didn't talk about Anna, she was always there. Brian fell deep into a funk, and had to claw his way out. Kate says how he spent more and more time at the fire station, because he didn't want to come back to a house that felt too big. Sara started looking for signs that Anna would come back to her-- salt spilled in the car rideshape of letters, or anything else unusual. Kate says she blamed herself, since it was all because of her that Anna was at the courthouse that day. Kate thinks that if she had died like she felt she was supposed to, Anna never would have.

      Kate talks about how now she teaches ballet for little girls, and every time she sees two little girls sinking into plies at the barre, she think of herself and Anna. Kate mentions that one day, after developing photos from her high school graduation, they found an old pictures of Anna. Kate says she and Sara stared at it for hours, trying to memorize the hospital.way she looked. Kate kept the picture, but instead of framing it, she tucked it away in a drawer. Whenever she can't quite recall the number of freckles on Anna's shoulder, or her smile, she pulls out the picture. Kate says how she thinks about Anna's kidney working in her body, Anna's blood flowing through her veins. Kate thinks about how she takes Anna with her, wherever she goes.

    • The story follows the life of 13- year-old Anna Fitzgerald, who enlists the help of an attorney, Campbell Alexander, to sue her parents, Brian and Sara Fitzgerald for rights to her own body. Kate Fitzgerald, Anna's older sister, suffers from leukemia, and their parents conceived Anna through in vitro fertilization to be a genetic match donor for her sister Kate. Anna donates genetic material throughout her life, including blood and bone marrow for her sister. Their parents want Anna to donate a kidney to Kate after she goes into renal failure, but Anna instead files a lawsuit against her parents for medical emancipation from her parents despite the consequences of her sister's health.

      Her parents, Brian and Sara Fitzgerald, have different reactions to the law suit. Brian has mixed feelings whereas, Sara feels that Anna should donate the kidney to save Kate's life. Sara is a lawyer turned housewife and decides to represent herself and her husband in the suit. She continuously attempts to get Anna to drop the suit, but Anna refuses and moves out of the house and into the fire station where her father works.

      After Kate's cancer diagnosis, Jesse Fitzgerald, Brian and Sara's oldest child, grows up to be a troublemaker involved in alcohol, drugs, theft, and arson. Throughout the book an arsonist frequently sets fires in the area, a problem for Brian and his colleagues. After following the clues, Brian discovers that the arsonist was Jesse. Following which, Brian confronts Jesse and learns how badly Kate's illness has affected him. Brian vows to keep Jesse's arson a secret.

      The judge at the hearing, Judge DeSalvo, is a parent who lost his 12-year-old daughter in a drunk-driving accident. The guardian ad litem assigned to Anna as her representative is Julia Romano, an old girlfriend of Campbell's.

      Julia and Campbell met in a private high school. She was a scholarship student from a poor background while he was a rich kid. They fell in love and enjoyed a relationship until Campbell broke up with her at graduation. Julia never knew the reason but felt it was because of her social class. Although they try to conduct court business, their attraction to each other is obvious.

      Campbell has a guide dog named Judge even though Campbell seems to have no disabilities. He keeps the purpose of the dog a secret and gives frivolous answers to any questions on the dog's purpose. Julia and Campbell spend the night together with Campbell being the first one to leave. Feeling abandoned again, Julia is frustrated about her relationship with Campbell. But when Campbell has a seizure during Anna's testimony, the purpose of the dog is revealed: he is a seizure dog. She discovers Campbell developed epilepsy after a wreck before graduation, and he broke up with her because he did not want to be a burden. She supports him, and they reunite.

The judge decides in favor of Anna and gives Campbell medical power of attorney over her.

      Anna dies in a car wreck soon after she is emancipated from her parents. Her kidneys, and other organs, are donated to Kate, and other patients that might need them.

      Kate believes that the reason she survived is because someone had to go, and Anna took her place. She grows up to be a dance instructor and whenever she'd missed her sister, she'd look at the scars from the kidney transplant and believe she took Anna wherever she went.
