I plan to read this book since reading a fascinating article about Rory Stewart and his work to preserve traditional Afghan architecture in "Smithsonian" magazine. For anyone who wants to catch up on what Stewart's been up to, see the September 2007 edition.
great book. not dour like anne said. very interesting and loved rory's interactions with the land and the people of afghanistan.
Dear Ann H, I was interested in a man who could do so much at a relatively young age but to be frank, I found this book hugely disappointing. If you still wish to read it may I suggest that you read The Sewing Circles of Herat by Christina Lamb first, this book is very accessible and will give you a good grounding before embarking on Rory Stewart's rather dour offering.
