The Places in Between

by Rory Stewart

In January 2002 Rory Stewart walked across Afghanistan-surviving by his wits, his knowledge of Persian dialects and Muslim customs, and the kindness of strangers. By day he passed through mountains covered in nine feet of snow, hamlets burned and emptied by the Taliban, and communities thriving amid the remains of medieval civilizations. The book has its moments. One would enjoy reading about his adventures while walking through Afghanistan.
I do however feel that he never really told us the real reason behind his walk but only that 'he felt that he had too' and thus the reader may have lost a little admiration they would have otherwise felt for his adamance to walk all the way.

Dear Ann H, I was interested in a man who could do so much at a relatively young age but to be frank, I found this book hugely disappointing. If you still wish to read it may I suggest that you read The Sewing Circles of Herat by Christina Lamb first, this book is very accessible and will give you a good grounding before embarking on Rory Stewart's rather dour offering.

I plan to read this book since reading a fascinating article about Rory Stewart and his work to preserve traditional Afghan architecture in "Smithsonian" magazine. For anyone who wants to catch up on what Stewart's been up to, see the September 2007 edition.
