Running with Scissors: A Memoir

Running with Scissors: A Memoir

by Augusten Burroughs

There is a passage early in Augusten Burroughs's harrowing and highly entertaining memoir, Running with Scissors, that speaks volumes about the author. While going to the garbage dump with his father, young Augusten spots a chipped, glass-top coffee table that he longs to bring home. "I knew I could hide the chip by fanning a display of magazines on the surface, like in a doctor's office," he... (read more)

Brilliant Babes (And Dudes) Who Read Selectively 634 books / 167 members / 7507 posts So, what makes you a selective reader? If you like Dan Brown, Danielle Steele, Nicholas Sparks, or similar works, you MAY not be into this club. We are a group of intelligent persons who love both thought-provoking literature and quality brain candy. Actually, I mainly started it for myself and my friends, but anybody can apply if you think you're down with the Brilliant Babes--just send someone a note explaining why YOU think you are a brilliant babe (or dude) who reads selectively. This is a super-casual group. Anybody can suggest a book to read, anybody can add books to the reading list. We welcome any and all intelligent book discussion (not to mention whining about books we hated or gushing about books we loved). And don't worry if you have a really embarrassing book on your shelves...we all have skeletons in the closet.

To ask for an invite please DO NOT use the admin message box, leave a note on the profile pages of either rob or Suze...we will get back to you as soon as we can...thanks for your patience...and if you insist on asking for an invite via the group admin message box you will be ignored...so don't. Also, please remember that, although we TRY to get to everyone's requests in a timely manner, we do have other responsibilities that sometimes delay us from looking at your shelves. Your patience will be rewarded

A note about being snobs: As hard as it is to believe, with all of the nice people here on Shelfari, we get an e-mail once every week or two saying that we are snobs. That really just depends on your definition of a snob. Yes, this is a private group. Yes, we jokingly call ourselves brilliant. Yes, we have rather defined reading tastes that cut out a lot of mass-market fiction. Does that truly make us snobs? We hand-picked many members of our initial group around what we like to read or think we'd like to read. I don't think this makes us so much snobs as "people who want to discuss the kind of stuff that they like to read and don't care to discuss stuff that they don't like to read." (shrugs) We're pretty accepting. So, before sending us mean e-mails, see above for the joining process. And just remember: If you don't make it in, you probably haven't read the same books that we've all read and we'd have nothing to talk about!

A special note from the admin: We want everyone to have a great time here. All we expect is that everyone plays nice! Good-humored sarcasm is in; putting down or harassing our members is not, and we won't hesitate to remove a repeat offender from the group.

Note on the threads: please feel free to go back and resurrect any of the earlier threads that you find interesting...

Audible Books to recommend 256 books / 206 members / 502 posts I thought it would be nice to have a list of books that people have read that are on audible (i.e., downloads from Audible.com, library CDs, etc).

Often I have to go from book review back to Audible.com to see if it's there before I can check it off to my Wish List (right now I am listening to my books for the most part). I don't like cassette tapes, however, and I have seen where a book may be available on tape but not CD or download. Downloads are less expensive, too. Starlet

Readers In Thongs 209 books / 245 members / 3966 posts *Note* Want the basics so you know how to jump into the current challenge? For an overview of the current RIT challenge, the RIT FAQ site is: http://ritsfaqs.wordpress.com

RIT is the Home Of: *The Weight Loss Reading Challenge
*The Amazing Page Race Reading Challenge
*The Alphabet Soup Reading Challenge

*TBR Makeover Challenge

So, just how big is your TBR pile? Or do you have more than one TBR pile? Or even better, do you have a place where you stash those books away from the eyes of those who may not totally understand your reading obsession.

Readers In Thongs have huge TBR piles. They either own them outright or bring them home from the library. Some books slip further and further down those TBR piles until they are almost forgotten. Or at least they were until Readers In Thongs began reading challenges based strictly upon each person's own personal treasure of To-Be-Read books. Every challenge here is based on books you already own or can borrow. There is no need to ever buy a book for this reading group if you don't want to. The Challenges are built around themes such as weight loss or number of pages read. You can participate as much or as little as you want. The point is to read what you want when you want, share those good reads you find with others in the group, and have fun.

Visit us at: http://readersinthongs.blogspot.com for our reviews and other group news.

Readers In Thongs lost a combined weight of 158 pounds, 5 ounces as of December 31, 2007 in the Weight Loss Reading Challenge

Readers In Thongs read a combined total of 190,845 pages (bonus pages included) during The Amazing Page Race Book Challenge.

A series of unfortunate choices 24 books / 47 members / 125 posts Okay, so what's your biggest, latest disappointment with a book that looked or sounded great, or with a book suggested by someone who you really really respect that turned out to be a dog, or maybe just your favorite bad book of all time....?

My latest letdown was "Special Topics in Calamity Physics," which was way too clever in an exhausting way, but which my friend Sue forced me to buy. Still, it paid off in that now there are people at work who after seeing me with the book think I enjoy particle physics as a hobby. So there's that.

And my favorite bad book of all time is "The Thorn Birds." 'Nuff said.
Mental Illness, Depression 159 books / 112 members / 83 posts I have this interest in books on mental illness, depression, psychology -- I don't realy know why exactly, I have to search quite a bit to find books on this subject on audible.com, but I have just started a short list -- just wondering if anyone else has this interest and what books you have read or want to read on the topic.

McMickin's bookworms 63 books / 44 members / 325 posts READ THIS BEFORE YOU START POSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a private group for my seniors who are completing their second book project - which brings them all one step closer to passing my class and, hopefully, graduating! Students are to start a post with their book title in the subject line. Pose a question or make a comment about your book within one week of joining. Then, over the next two weeks, respond to at least three other people. Finally, post a brief review of your book when you complete it - do this under your original post. All 3 of my classes will be under the same group; therefore, it is very important that you put your book title in the subject line. Also, keep all posts relevant to the subject! I am going to start one post about something random - you can use this to talk to each other about how much you hate all this work I am assigning- or anything else random. I won't be mad....say whatever you want to each other as long as it is here and not under a book post! : )

Reader's Cramp 79 books / 200 members / 265 posts This group is solemnly dedicated to every reader's cramp: the aggravating tome.

Do you still remember the last book you read that frustrated the hell out of you? Maybe it led you on, peaked your interest but then clichéd you to death in the dark alley of its final 'graph. Perhaps it promised what it could not deliver, or just grated on you with preachy soapboxing.

Add your "favorite" frustrating books to the group shelf. Vent about your latest letdown. Commiserate, carp, and kvetch. Go ahead, let it all out...we understand.
Book Club for People Who Like to Read 15 books / 2 members / 0 posts We started a book-sharing book club while in South Africa. The concept worked fabulously. When one of the members moved to New York, the same concept worked well there. Another member took the book sharing concept to Dubai, so we are now a global network of book club members.
McMickin's Bookworms - 1 20 books / 18 members / 115 posts This group is for students in Mrs. McMickin's 1st block class. On this site you will make a statement or pose a question about the book you are reading. The heading for the post should be the title of the book. You will also respond to at least three other posts. Upon completing your book, you will write a review under your original post. (Be sure you don't "tell all" ....don't ruin it for a future reader!)
Writing Readers 504 books / 2838 members / 3076 posts If you're an aspiring or successful writer, this is the group for you. Suggest your favorite books on the craft, discuss past and present challenges, and share some nurture with a growing community of other online-savvy, "writing readers". Welcome!

Note: If you want to promote a book or writing website on which you publish, please use the "Shameless Self-Promotion" discussion thread. In order to keep this from becoming a chaotic open bazaar of single-shot marketing, we are deleting book notices, reviews, etc. from other threads and directing all authors to the "Shameless Self-Promotion" thread. Thank you for understanding.

MOTTO:

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY...YOU CAN STILL SAY IT!

We are a group of anti-corporate, poor and struggling petti-intellectuals from our beloved third-world planet, the Philippines, who love to rummage the dark corners of Recto and the dusty shelves of Booksale and Books And Mags (Though, occasionally there are books stolen from The Japan Foundation,Goethe Institute and National Bookstore), for Knowledge,Wisdom and Literary Treasures (and some occasional Porn)....We are selective readers and We sell books deemed unworthy of our Divine Personal Libraries (though, most of the time we sell even the most precious of our possessions, due to lack of money.) We are also known to sell books at very affordable, negotiable prices at the UP Sunken Garden( during the Lantern Parade or the UP Fair, most of us are Filipinos from PNU ( The founders, dunno about the rest)), But, we are a growing family and Everyone from any school, creed, country or belief is welcome to join the merry mob. Not just Filipino we are global...So, Pinoy, Pinoys or not, everyone can riot with us...

We also love to debate and do intellectual talks while eating Free Food at Film Festivals, Art Exhibits and Art and Cultural Festivals (Instituto Cervantes serves the BEST FREE FOOD as well as CCP)..At times we also cook, thanks to the inspiration of Haruki Murakami,Esquivel and Hare Krishna...

We Love Music especially if we can steal and download them for free...We love to read while listening to Easy-Listening Crust and Grindcore Music.

We are pirates and vandals and Licensed Teachers...And we love to eat, drink and The Beatles..

To order books, just give us the titles, and if we have 'em..you can have 'em...

Book Chat 682 books / 1838 members / 5301 posts Rather than being about a particular genre or author or book this group is about books and reading in general.

Topics have ranged from such things as favorite bookstore, whether you re-read your favorite books, what kind of bookmarks you use, where you read, what you read, i.e. stand alone or epics or short stories or poems and how you arrange your bookshelves at home as well as how you arrange your Shelfari shelves, to name a few.

It's fun to see how much we have in common with others and maybe learn some new ideas at the same time.
