Snow Flower and the Secret Fan has been reviewed so many times, by so many people more intelligent than I. My humble thoughts: Though I was not able to get into this book to the degree I became absorbed in, say, Memoirs of a Geisha, this novel was a mesmerizing story of the lifelong friendship of two women in 19th century China-a truly alien world to me. This is a gripping and ultimately heart-rending tale. The life of women in this era...let's just say it must be read to be believed, and I'm not particularly referring to the footbinding featured here, though that is certainly part of it. I cannot stress enough how worthy this book is of being read.
