The Devil Wears Prada: A Novel

by Lauren Weisberger

It's a killer title: The Devil Wears Prada. And it's killer material: author Lauren Weisberger did a stint as assistant to Anna Wintour, the all-powerful editor of Vogue magazine. Now she's written a book, and this is its theme: narrator Andrea Sachs goes to work for Miranda Priestly, the all-powerful editor of Runway magazine. Turns out Miranda is quite the bossyboots. That's pretty much... (read more)

This was a fun read. It gives you a peep into the NYC world of fashion and who hasn't worked for a jerk of a boss. Sure, it's chick lit but it is still a fun read. I'm not expecting a Granta story but a fast read into the world of fashion. Pure and blissful escapsim.

Big question, why doesn't she keep the luggage or sell the luggage at the end?

Name dropping seems to win out over actual plot in this story.

Can my 13 year old (who loves fashion and the movie) read this? I don't know if it has mature themes that were not in the movie. The movie was fine for her age group.

I was reading a bio about Anna Wintour called 'the cool and hot times of ..something something..editor of vogue' by Jerry Openheimer. (sp?) Well to me it seems. the real life Anna Wintour isn't really a devil - she's just very driven. And obssessed. And insecure.

But that's fashion. I mean hats off to her - all I can say is I wouldn't want to work for her, but then fashion's not my thing. It's a bit silly that a budding journalist accepts a job on a fashion rag - I mean..she must have been desperate for work.

'Fashion Babylon' is a better read if you want to learn about the inside of fashion - from designer POV. Also 'Celebutantes' (stylists) and 'The fashion conspiracy' about the global fashion industry.
