“Claire Waverly embraced her family's reputation for oddness; half-sister Sydney ran from it - and ran into all kinds of trouble. Sydney flees an abusive husband -- an escape three years in the making -- and returns to her family home in small-town North Carolina. To say her sister is set in her ways is to put it mildly. Claire could burst (into flame; not quite metaphorically) over the change Sydney and her daughter, *and* the flirtatious new neighbor bring.
Nice bit of Southern-quirky-gothic plus magical realism plus romance; Sydney's abuse and some scenes of Claire's new romance and graphic enough that I wouldn't call it cozy or whatever. Which isn't to say it wouldn't be ok to suggest to most high schoolers.”
