by Michael F. Roizen, Mehmet Oz

If there ever was a pair of docs who can make the small intestine seem truly intriguing, here they are. Dr. Mehmet Oz is an alternative-medicine maverick and a cardiologist known to implement acupuncture during open-heart surgery. Dr. Michael Roizen developed the RealAge concept of calculating one's biological, as opposed to chronological, age. Here they've whipped up a witty guide to the... (read more)

Roizen and Mehmet have put together an entertaining review of the human digestive system and a collection of techniques to help people lose weight. Much of the material reflects concepts that I came to, as well, while researching for "The Evolution Diet" (such as keeping metabolism up through snacking, the differentiation of good and bad stress and its effects on weight, benefits of exercise, and briefly what our ancestors ate) but "You On a Diet" contains some great new ideas and concepts....

This is a informative, fast-moving read. Don't think I've ever read a self-help book so quickly. It's a bit the "dummies" books and the biology stuff is presented so clearly. Maybe if science textbooks were written this way I might have chosen the health field. The concept about waist measurement being so key really has merit.

“You: On a Diet” is a book written by two of the most respected specialists in this field and offers information on how the body works, how it burns fat, how it stores it, so people can realize how they can maintain a healthy weight.
Dr. Michael Roizen and Dr. Mehmet Oz say that waist measurement is more important than weight measurement. They recommend in this book a two weeks reboot program that allows for the start losing two inches of the waist.
The authors say that yo-yo dieting can be ended if it`s properly understood the connection between chemicals that influence hunger and hormones that give the satiety sensation.
The book is interesting and easy to read, although it is written by specialists and based on medical research. The doctors explain in an accessible way how the body works, why it gains fat, and the most important: gives a healthy solution to people who want to get rid of the fat.
Many people fail in their weight loss program because they cannot follow the recommended diet. This book offers a good weight loss program designed by experts that consider not only the diet, but also how much sleep or physical activity someone needs.
For people interested in weight loss surgery or medication, those issues are also discussed in the book along with how the brain, hormones, heart, stomach, muscles, and genetics influence weight gain.
“You: On a Diet” includes a list of foods that fight appetite, some diseases, or inflammations. It also contains valuable information regarding portion size, weight loss myths, and how stress influences food choices.
The book also provides useful recipes. The pictures and dialogues make it more interesting and pleasant to read.
