His others, where the central character is someone else, are not as good, but the Dave Robicheaux series is just my favorite detective series of all time”

I’ve learned this: just as a diver who's spent far too long submerged and needs to slowly decompress to prevent nitrogen bubbles occluding blood vessels, so should a reader be purged of accumulated excess verbiage before turning to prose that is exquisitely economical and the better for it. Not fair to compare? OK, OK. It’s just that I have a long-term relationship with Dave, Clete and Tripod and actually feel sorry when I’ve come to the last page. I will give Richard Powers another chance to become my friend. ”

You don't always know where he's taking you but the ride is always exciting. The story in this book takes place in the days just before Katrina almost wiped out New Orleans. Dave Robicheaux must deal with his demons while trying to keep the bad guys in line. And Burke always manages to create some really bad guys. If you've never read Burke's books, start at the beginning and follow Robicheaux's life as a cop. ”
