How she grew up in slavery and dreamed of anything that would relieve her from the pain of slavery and her masters. Having to grow up so fast in so little time was crazy, but she did it. My favorite part was when Harriet stands up for herself and tells her master the truth even though she knew there might be consequences. When she wanted to marry the man she loved and her master was holding her back she just let it all out. An incredible book that needs dedication to read.”

It's one of those time-tested classics you've just got to read.”

The book is a breath of fresh air after the inconsistent writing of Anne Moody. The descriptions are so vivid I could feel her longing, her fear, and her pain. This book shows how slaves who had been caught doing the most minor of crimes could be punished in anyway their master saw fit, which was an incredibly gruesome gory section of this book. My only critism of this book would be its vagueness on Harriet's actual escape.”

Read this one and Hannah Crafts' "The Bondswoman's Narrative." Both provide an important historical context and add previously silenced writers to the overall discourse about U.S.-American slavery.”

It showed all she went through to make sure her children would never have to know the life she knew as a slave and the millions of sacrifices she would make to get them back. Sad but wonderful true story.”
