Wow! This is an awesome book! I read it in less than two hours on a car ride. Oddly enough, I was returning from Birmingham, AL when I read it.

The author gives an honest depiction of the South.

This is an absolute must-read to all readers!

This book was a great book. Because it was a book that was talking about slavery and is not fair for all off us to be treated different. So a girl tries to make everything better but makes it a bad. So they took her to jail for she can respect the whites.

The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963 follows the story of Daniel and Wilona Watson and their children Byron, Kenny, and Joetta. A close-knit, loving family with strict, yet fair parents take a trip from their home in Flint, Michigan to Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. Daniel and Wilona decide that Byron needs some guidance and structure in his life in the form of Grandma Sands, a tough, yet caring grandparent. Byron has gotten himself into some minor trouble, i.e. lighting fires, skipping school, disobeying adults and they want to stop the increasing trouble before it gets out of hand. Byron will spend the summer with Grandma Sands. So, the Watson family sets out for Birmingham to deliver Byron. They arrive there during a very unsettling, turbulent time known as the Civil Rights Movement. Daniel and Wilona believe that Byron will be safe, since Birmingham has had relatively little violence compared to other parts of the South. Yet, horror, tragedy, and violence occur when bigotry and hate rear their ugly heads that summer in Birmingham while the whole Watson family is there. Even four little girls are not safe while they are attending Sunday school.

Byron's attitude towards life, Kenny's safe world, and Joetta's love of fun and friendship are shattered one hot summer day in 1963. A story based on historical fact is the background for this children's novel dealing with prejudice, civil rights, and basic human needs.
