Shelfari edited the description of Water for Elephants 2 weeks ago.

    • As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

    • Edited a quotation: “Nothing happens to me anymore.That'sanymore. That's the reality of getting old, and I guess that's really the crux of the matter. I'm not ready to be old yet.”
    • Added a quotation: “Age is a terrible thief. Just when you're getting the hang of life, it knocks your legs out from under you and stoops your back. It makes you ache and muddies your head and silently spreads cancer throughout your spouse.
    • Added a quotation: “Although there are times I'd give anything to have her back, I'm glad she went first. Losing her was like being cleft down the middle. It was the moment it all ended for me, and I wouldn't have wanted her to go through that. Being the survivor stinks.
    • Added a quotation: “With a secret like that, at some point the secret itself becomes irrelevant. The fact that you kept it does not.

  7. Sue H

Sue H edited the books influenced by this book of Water for Elephants Wednesday, October 14 2009.

    • Added Jewel of Medina Spanning the time of her rise to Muhammad's wife, five others precede her position but not her vision or purpose in life. She is by far the most important role in the life of Muhammad. Sherry Jones tells a visionary and compassing story of little Red to A'isha from the small compound she is protected to the desert sands she defends her beliefs. Certainly this is compelling reading for just the historical aspects of women in the role of war and world relgions.
    • marked the description of Jewel of Medina as not a spoiler
