The Spring '07 College Book Chat Society's selection. The whole group seemed to really enjoy the book, as it brought to mind memories of pets still with us and since departed. A light and enjoyable read.
Wonderful book. Its hillarious. You will surely adore the dog inspite of all the chaos it creates. A must and easy read.
This has been one of the best books ive read. I loved it. It was hilarious, heartwarming, tragic, and cute. Though I dont have a dog, and I wont be able to get one for a while (I live in a no-pet apartment) I want one, I love dogs, and I loved this book!
A must read for all dog lovers. An awesome book. Couldn't put it down. Captures the sentiments of a dog owner prefectly.
I honestly don't think you have to be a pet lover or owner to enjoy this book. You just need a heart and a good sense of humor. What a wonderful book.
yeah, i dont have a pet and I really loved the book, and I guess I have good sense of humor too, so you're right.
While at times many of us feel we have the "worst" dog in the world because of what ever it is they just did, I believe my dogs need to take a back seat to Marley. The adventures this family had with Marley are very funny and I am so glad these things happened to them and not to me.
wow this book was great!! i laughed out loud and i smiled! i can read this book over agen a million times and i will never get tired of it! its sad in the end but it makes you happier. john grogan must have loved this dog soo much to write a book about marley. imagine how he felt when marley passed
Loved it. Love dogs.
A friend gave me this book when we were experiencing "Marly-like situations" with our new yellow lab puppy. I think that book saved our relationship with our dog, Charlie. Here's Charlie with his two favorite aunt's: http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/2/0/2/7/1/7/webimg/74780032_o.jpg
I loved it! I cried and and I laughed all the time.
I just started this book a few nights ago. A friend sent it to me when she found out I had to put my beloved pup (14 years old) to rest a few months ago.
Moving, funny .... takes you through all the ups and downs of owning a dog. Bit of a tear jerker too. All dog owners will lap (!) this up!
Do you remember my dog? Jenny. She a furbrat lol. I will try and get that book. Sounds neat
I'm loaning my copy to my boss but if you haven't found it by the time I get it back, I'll send it to you. Very touching and sweet and funny. Have your Kleenex ready!
I own a yellow labrador and she definitely was an alpha female with selective hearing. This book definitely explores the relationship between a dog and owner but it also captures the essence of the lab - they are unlike other breeds with their enthusiasm for life and FOOD. The writing might not have been the best but the content make it worth reading.
I like cats so much , Dogs is Sincere Gaurd , must be iutside home for safty of human
How are you feeling today? Have you heard of book swapping? You can pass me books and I pass you mine to an address in the US.
I was given this book from a friend of mine. I resisted reading it for a long time...it set on my shelf until one day I decided to give it a try. Once I started reading the first page I was hooked. I wanted to know to know more about Marley and the adventures his family enjoyed having him a part of their lives. Be prepared, the book follows the life of Marley. You might need tissues at the end, especially if you are a dog owner yourself.
O yea I forgot to give it my rating; 1,000,000 stars!
I could not put this down. Educational for new dog owners.
I read this book with a book discussion group at my local library's literacy program, and my group couldn't understand why anyone would write a whole book about a dog! I'm not a "complete" dog person, but I do own a dog, and I'm enjoying my dog, and could enjoy this book a lot, too. I really enjoyed seeing Grogan and his new dog get the Cesar treatment on the TV show 'Dog Whisperer' too!
Marley was a great dog, but could have any of us have tolerated his wild, unpredictable behavior? This story tells us something about our American culture and how much some will tolerate from pets.
Could barely get through this one. Not my type of writing style, and not that interesting. Grogan should have stayed with article length for this story and spared us all the mundane details of his boring life. Admittedly, I teared up at the end, but the last two pages was all I needed to know about this dog and this man. Not my cuppa.
I agree with you on that. As I read I wondered,"I thought this was about the DOG, not a memoir of Grogan that happens to include a dog."
I love this story and the style, simple, it is like one of your friend describing his life with a foolish but loving dog. I love dogs and cannot imagine my life without one.Page after page, you find so much in common whith yourself and your dog, even if less destroying that Marley. And when I reaches the end of the book, I wanted to go to J. Grogan's home and spend time with him and his family talking about Marley, they loved him so much and it is so sad when your dog dies. And also to see how life is going on with "Marley's reincarnation"!
This book reminds me of the Black Lab I had growing up. It made me smile but also made me cry. The story is great if you are an animal lover
This book reminds me of the Black Lab I had growing up. It made me smile but also made me cry. The story is great if you are an animal lover
I liked this book because it reminded me of James my black lab that died about two years ago. I think anyone who has owned a lab could write a book about them. Love them dogs, can't bring myself to get another one yet. Hate the thought of losing them.
Once you've read it, you will feel good inside. It's amazing how a dog can bring so much happiness and love into a person's life. And how they can teach you valuable life lessons about things that matter the most.
This wonderfully written book...touched my heart and took me back in time to my dog Rufus...who was just as mad and crazy as Marley was! Stirred up emotions and feelings that only a true dog lover can relate to.
All dog lovers can related to the book. Nice reading, but would have liked it about 50 pages shorter.
A must read for any animal lover. However do keep some kleenix handy, as you will either be laughing or crying, though out the book.
Ah, yeah. Soo many tears at the end.. It was amazing, I reccomend it.
I really want to read this book! And guess what else?y dog's name is Marley! I wouldn't guess that there were dogs named Marley because my dad got it from Bob Marley! That is weird! :]
I hear the movie will be out in due time. I hope it is as good as the book. As for changing my life, it makes me more appreciative of my own Yellow Lab, Vera, and sad at the same time. She'll be 8 this year, and I know how quickly time passes (I'll be 60 next week, so we have to appreciate every moment we have. At times I think we should get another Lab before she gets too old so she can teach the new one all her tricks (like getting our paper everyday,) but then I think of all the work involved, and I'm not sure I'm up for it. We also have three cats at home. We'll just take one day at a time...
I love this book . icryed at the end its so sadi think many people should read it.
This book was great. I told myself that I wasn't going to cry at the end - but I did...a lot.
This is a must read for any animal lover. It's cute, funny, and I laughed through most of it, and I think I cried at the end too. Definately a "must have".
Light and sweet, I finished this in 2 days. It's an uplifting tearjerker without being overly sentimental.
I loved it, but I also cried my eyes out. Made me appreciate my dog :)
My sister read this book she says it is wonderful!
I absolutely LOVED this book! I am a little partial to it because it is set in South Florida (Boca Raton/Fort Lauderdal) and I picked up on all the comments he made about the locals and such since I live here. Since I'm also a dog lover - it really touched my heart. I kept putting off the end of the book because I knew the inevitable would happen. It's a must read! They are filming the movie version right now in South FL with Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston - comes out Christmas Day this year!! HOORAY!
This book was awesome, but it was sad when the dog died
I cried at the end! I have been wishing for a dog of my own!
I really enjoyed the read, but have no desire to see the movie. It will ruin all the great pictures I have created of marley and his family.
well so far in my reading; I love it!
It is a wonderful story, and as myself love dogs i enjoyed reading it a lot.
I am reading this book right now and am loving it..
possible spoiler for anyone not this far in yet.. warning..
Jenny is nuts! All of a sudden she hates Marley and makes me wonder what she will do when her kids act out, as everyone who is a parent knows, in time the kids will become nasty and mean.. will she say ok I'm done now.. get rid of them?? I think she is a very unstable person who may drown her kids or some terrible thing... I realize that I am not so far in yet and may change my mind but right now I am not liking her at all.
Do you have kids? It's called post-partum depression and is common. I thought she handeled the whole thing rather well, considering what she was going through. I'm glad things ended well for the whole family. I hope you enjoyed the book anyways.
I just read a few chapters in the bookstore and i was spell bound. I will have a love hate relationship with this book. When i saw the pics, I missed my own dog so much. Never saw a book that hit me so hard.
what's the book about?
otobong a, just read a description. It is a popular book about a family and their wild and crazy dog. It is unusually captivating. You should read it.
I really liked this book. I've never had a dog like in the book, when I read it, it made me feel like it was my dog.
I felt the same way, I felt like it really was my dog.
when i read this book sime parts i cried in but i would love to have a dog like marley and it kinda made me feel like i was there with them.
Just loved the book - with a young 6-month old Lab who's taken over our house, I fully empathise with the book and the author!
We took this book on CD with us on our summer road trip. It was a good story all four of us enjoyed it - two adults and two children. I was expecting more dog story, it is really about people, John and his wife, their trials and tribulations as they grow their family. Some of it was hard for the kids (6 and 7) to understand, but they enjoyed it and turns out his friend that appears several times in the story by name, is my college room mates' husband. That was a surprise. Hard to drive with tears in the end, but he turns the loss into a heartwarming moment.
It's not great literature, but it has heart. Better than that, it made me laugh, MANY times... and cry, I confess. (I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that I've always been a dog person.) I love that there is a chapter entitled "The Things He Ate." My boss has a dog like Marley, and this dog eats things like cookbooks and entire bags of new potatoes. He's eaten sewing needles, habanero salsa, her husband's boxer shorts. I tell my boss she should write a book, but John Grogan's already done it, so people would think she was imitating him. Anyway, back to the book - as soon as I finished reading it, I mailed it to my daughter, who is an even more enthusiastic dog person than I am, and who loves to laugh... and cry.
I was absolutely appalled at the owners in this book. They locked Marley in a garage while they went away to work - and then were surprised when he turned destructive. He was never disciplined, given jobs or exercise to do, and at one point they made a cage for him to lock him inside. Abusive! Then they went away to Disney World when he was dying. Are we expected to laugh or feel sorry for these terrible, egotistic, materilaistic owners or care about their sex life, which is gone into more detail than merited?
I was as appalled at times with what they chose to do with Marley and the their surprise was a surprise to me, but it was a story about two people who went through the trials and tribulations that goes along with owning a dog-especially a lab puppy. I have owned two labs in my time, and no matter what we did, they were destructive creatures, but you couldn't help but love them. Even so, I couldn't help but to cry at the end of this book. And, I have recommended it to a few animal lovers. I can't help it, I loved Marley and I guess because I could relate. I didn't ever try the cage thing with opur tow labs, but now it doesn't sound like such a bad idea, especially after they ate the siding off our garage. This book was very simple and easy, but I don't think it was intended to be anything more than just a story of two peoples lives owning a wacky dog.
the owners didn't seem to make any connection between Marley's behaviour and their own terrible behaviour. I thought the author was selfish and the book was only partly redeemed when he realised he loved Marley. Marley gave so much more than he ever got back from his owners. You would eat the siding off the garage too if you were locked in there for hours on end.
"Bad Dog, Marley" is the kids version of this book. Being a teacher, I have read it to my students and they absolutely love it!! If you enjoyed "Marley & Me" and you know of younger dog lovers, check it out!
I loved this book too. Poor Marley stayed in lots of trouble, but you had to love him. He was a sweetheart.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a very fast read and very emotional as well as humorous at times. I have a yellow lab; it was hard for me to relate to some of the antics of Marly, because Labs are usually not as mischievous as this one was, but then I have a female, so maybe that made the difference. I bought the book at first because the picture on the cover reminded me of my dog who is now 8.I read it after I saw the author on bookspan and enjoyed his presentation. I was saddened at the end, and it still haunts me as my dog ages, but that is the reality of a dog life. I do recommend it to anyone who loves Labs and loves dogs.
The movie's rated PG. So I'm thinking that they're going to cut out parts of the book (the whole trying to have a baby thing). And it appears from the trailer that they already changed some facts (John getting Marley to delay having kids).
Oh, you have watched the movie. I am so looking forward to it, it's not released here in Singapore yet....a few more weeks to go before it hit the big screen!
I love the book and i know, i will love the movie too, as the lab simply too adorable and too naughty!! But, sad ending..
I haven't watched it yet. I'm waiting till it comes out on DVD to rent it from the library. The movie just looked too much like a kid's movie, which I thought was odd since I woudln't recomend the book (well this version of the book) to kids.
itr should be rated pg 13 because there are some veyr inappropriate parts. it was a great movie, and very sad. i hope i can find some time to read the book.
This is a great book. It was one of those can't put it down books for me. So many funny parts as well as some sad things as he aged and eventually passed away. A great read and hopefully the movie does this book justice.
Is the book worth reading? My mother and my aunt thought it was pretty sad, they cried and said it was a tear jerker. Is the movie any good?
The book is a great book, but, "yes" sad. My sister said the movie is funny and a must see. I say read the book first though! Hope you like it.
yes, you should read it, I loved it! I think it's a great novel, even though the end comes, it's nice how they all remember him.
oh you must reat the book...
yes the end is a lil sad
but i bet u, the rest of it..... u are going to laugh ur lungs out
i saw the movie and now i just want to read it the movie was really funny and hope to get to read when i have time
I saw the movie and am reading the book right now...suggest waiting! The book is no where near what the movie was.
As I was reading this book I couldn't help but wonder, if Marley was still around who would win... Marley or Ceasar, The Dog Whisperer?
Nao gostei muito. Todos elogiam muito o livro, seila, acho que o problema é meu, nao gosto de cachorros.
I liked this book, because I love dogs. The author related the history about the life of your dog, which is equal for all pets. I've had a female dog for 14 years and I lived all your life. When I read the book, I linked the history of Marley with my dog. I liked all book, but the end part is special, because the author related the suffering of the dogs and people when the dogs will die. I liked as the author write a dog life, and as he put the feeling in your words. I recommed for readers who love your pets or want appreciate a exciting history.
I hard the the book was a lot batter then the movie and I hope I can read the book some day
oh gosh a dog book? really? is this book about how much people love this dog and are sad when it dies?
i love dogs myself but you gotta put things in perspective people.
u know thts wht i said when i got the book and started reading it and stopped, and a year later i tried to get into it and it worked.. is not about the dog the whole time, but about John's life, his family the ups and downs of his life, and Marley just happened to exist during this time.. very heart warming book, funny as well
i guess the quote "don't judge a book by its cover" really fits this novel
I cried at the end! I loved it!!
I had a basset hound who just passed away, and this book was kinda like, you know, medicine for me. It was absolutely amazing, and i cried at the end. The movie, too was absolutely fantastic. I really enjoyed Marley and Me and I think everyone who has had a dog in their life needs to read the book or watch the movie.
I kept hearing from people that this book will make your cry and I didn't believe them. I managed to hold out until the very end but ended up crying anyway. This is a great book for any pet owner.
I have heared this book is amazing :)
it is! You would love it!
I loved this book. I remember I hugged my dog for days after reading this book.
This book was awesome!
My favorite part is when they picked out Marly and he was called clearnce puppy.
I would recomend this book any day and any time!

i have a yellow lab right now and she has cancer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I'm so scared shes going to die can anybody help?if u can please help. no one understands how i feel right now.SHE IS ONLY SEVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(she's also my first dog!HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!(she doent have it to bad but still what if it turns into a really bad thing and she dies and i don't get to say goodbye!?)
I just got a Retriever last summer, and then read this book. Laughed, cried, etc. I love my dog, and now I'm wondering how I'll ever manage when she gets old. A lot of people who aren't "dog people" don't get it, how you can love an animal... but now I do too. I would say, just enjoy her like always, and give her extra loving! It's really hard to see a family member sick, especially when they can't tell you they're ok, maybe just tired. My dad died of cancer, and it is REALLY hard to watch that happen. Best wishes P.N.13
yes i lked this book because it i sheartwarming and full of fun. My favorite part was when they first get Marley and he destrits everything. He is so cute!!!!!!! This was one of my favorite books and i loved the movie too. Yes i would recommend this book because it is funny and a loving book. I giv ethis book over five stars!!!!!!
I loved this book. I liked the part when they went on a trip then the dogsitter came over and was scared to come over after that
at first i thought that this was not going to be a good book but once i started to read it, it reminded me about my dogs and how much fun i had with them
I am reading Marley and Me and it seems ok right now....
I totally loved this book!!!!!!! This book is packed with hilarious and real life stuff. My favorite part was where they went on vacation and had someone watch their dog and the dog went crazy and peed on stuff and tore up the whole house. I would recommend this 5 star book to everyone i know.
Is this book any good? I heard that it was really sad at the end. Do you think I should read it?
yes but be prepared for the tears at the end
if u havent read this book u have to! it was so good an t was a realistic story that was moving but showed true family and i think everyone should experience that
Is this any good? I heard it's sad.
Yeah, this book is really sad. It reminds me of my dog! He does crazy things like Marley does.
Such a Good book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is such a heartwarming story, I mean, it really defines the phrase "dogs are a man's best friend" because Marly really was... [3
Im so sad!! I know what happens!!!!! It reminds me of my dog BoBo when he was a puppy. But he passed too. Well I guess he can play with Marly up there!! Sorry to his family!!
I heard they used like 7, 8, or 9 different Marleys'
Which one do u think is better the movie or the book?
I have the same question.
Such an amazing book, and movie!
Should i read this?
omg yes! :)
The book is much better then the movie in my opinion. The book was amazing.
I have not read the book but I watched the movie and it was soooooo sad! Is the book really better than the movie?
Oh, yes, the book is so much better than the movie. There are alot more enjoyable funny moments and you get to know the whole family so much better.
This book was GREAT! I read it a lond time ago and I still LOVE it!
Yeah but this book is sad at the end!
This book had me laughing to the point of tears and then at the end, sobbing. I am so happy that I read it. I think the rest makes up for being heartbroken and sobbing at the end. That's life!
i read it very cute book excert when he pases;;; marley is just what a puppy should be.
Do you think the movie or the book's better?
The book was GREAT~*~*~ it lloked like marley brought lots of joy to the family this book was beast i wish i had a dog like that ~*~*~*~**~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Should I read this book?
Yes.. yes.. yes!
I was surprised that I lked the book and the movie. It's rare for me to like a movie as much as the book :)
what do you think about this book?????????????????????????????????
Should i read this ?
Just remember what Ernest Hemingway said "All true stories end in death." Well, this is a true story. But it is a very sweet story, including the story about the author's wife and his children and their journey through life with Marley. I would definitely recommend it if you love dog stories.
that's very true
lol idcccc u PEOPLE !
roof rooof !
where all my dogs AT
Why do you like this book
bc i like it
this is an amazing book
I thought this was an amazing book and anyone that just truly cares about something or somebody in their lives should read this book because it is a heart-warming, unexpected, tear-jerker book!!

It was just *sooo* touching :)
This book was an overall heartwarming story. A tear jerker, but at the same time really humerous in parts. I LOVED it & would recommend it to anyone.
After I read the book I am reading [which is The Zack Files] I am going to read Marley And Me.
hay u on i am whats up!!!! want to yak
i think it was really sad at the end i almost cried
i really like this book but the end was super sad
''Marley and Me'' is so good!!! Marley is such a funny dog, and I loved his personality throughout the book. From stealing turkeys, to eating a thousand dollar necklace, and nearly giving his owners about a hundred heart attacks, Marley's personality won't let you down!!!
