I appreciated the characters and conflicts so much more during my rereading of this modern classic. I have forgiven Amir and understand the difficulty of redeeming yourself after a near fatal error. We have had amazing class discussions about the novel, which have also given me a greater appreciation for life in Aghanistan and Hosseini's writer's craft. I am still a bigger fan of A Thousand Splendid Suns, but can now say I also appreciate The Kite Runner.

This book was fantastic. It was very well-written, and there was a lot of symbolism to make it deep. The characters were well drawn-out, and Khaled Hosseini really made you care about the characters. Although the main character, Amir, really screws up in the beginning of the book (spoilers withheld :D ), by the end, he atones himself, and the reader can begin to forgive him. It's a heartbreaking book, and those who don't like tear-jerkers should probably stay away. It also gives a lot of information on life in Afghanistan before and after the Taliban war began.

This story was surprisingly amazing. I wasn't sure i was going to like it because it was based around Afghanistan, yet it was a really nice story. The main character's name is Amir, and this is basically the story of his life and the troubles he has to face growing up.
The story starts in Kabul, Afghanistan where Amir grew up with his father, Baba, his father's friend, Rahim Khan, and his servants (who were Hazaras), Ali and Hassan. Hassan was 1 year yonger than Amir & was Amir's playmate growing up. They flew kites together, played cards, played with Hassan's slingshot, Amir read to Hassan, and they were like best friends, except, Amir never relized that they were friends, as Hassan was illiterate and had always been his servant. Then in the winter of 1975, their lives changed forever. Hassan and Amir enter a kite fighting competition and win. Hassan runs the last kite, and catches it, but at a price. Amir watches the downfall of Hassan and does nothing to stop it. This torments the rest of Amir's life, long into after he is married to Soraya and living in america. Wars start and Amir is forced to return to Afghanistan where he meets up with old problems, and old aquantances. He ends up bringing home Hassan's son, Sohrab, but faces problems along the way. The book ends with the message of hope and a conclusion to the pain by bringing the story in a full circle. The story ends with a kite fighting competition and the words, said so many times in the book, "For you a thousand times over".
