What is the name of that Book??? 170 books / 388 members / 1000 posts It can be frustrating to try to recall a book when you no longer remember the author or the title, only snippets of detail. Here is a place to tell what you do remember and maybe someone else can identify the book for you.
Page Turner 114 books / 164 members / 142 posts Books you can't put down, you know the books that make you loose a night of sleep. List 2-3 books that caused you loose the most sleep over. Maybe it was a book that caused you to call in sick to work? Whatever the case, list the book(s) that caused your hand to involuntarily reach for the next page.
Audible Books to recommend 542 books / 273 members / 1201 posts I thought it would be nice to have a list of books that people have read that are on audible (downloads from Audible.com & library CDs are my choices). I've created quite a wish list, making sure that it is listing books that can be listened to -- otherwise, no point in thinking about it. We are so lucky to have such an incredible selection of books to listen to now -- it's a whole new world and just in 5 years! I used to read 3 books a year if I was lucky -- now it's more like 30 books now that I can listen -- I love it!!

When members write down the books they have read -- give at lease a two word critique, even if as simple as the star system -- it's more helpful to see that than the list of books one plans to read. Also, mentioning the book name in Comments allows the reader to see what you are referring to when reading from iPhone!

FrugalReader.com Members 480 books / 42 members / 229 posts A group for Shelfari.com members who are also FrugalReader.com members!
Book Chat 1084 books / 1416 members / 8183 posts Welcome to Book Chat!

Instead of being about a particular book, author or genre this group is about books and reading in general. Discussions have covered a wide variety of topics, from bookmarks, to book type preference (paperback, hardcover or trade paperback) to book-to-movie tie-ins, to where and when you read and even what started you reading.

We also have some fun new projects starting and we hope you will join us.

Tenia has started a Secret Reader (aka Secret Santa) where we will exchange gently used books.

Tenia has also started a monthly book read. Our first group read will start in January and we are currently taking votes on several books that were nominated for the fiction genre.

We are also currently taking nominations for books for February and March. Our February read will be horror and our March read will be chick lit.

A discussion book raffle of sorts will be starting very soon so be sure to check back for details.

Feel free to pop-in and have a look around. We would love to have you join us for some discussion and fun.

Your admins...Kelly and Tenia
Brilliant Babes (And Dudes) Who Read Selectively 668 books / 174 members / 10378 posts October Spooky Duel Book Group Read: Dracula...Bram Stoker and Interview With the Vampire...Anne Rice

There are people who will read any book that comes out, and there are people who won't read anything that is less than 200 years old. The Brilliant Babes (and Dudes) are in-between--we often turn up our noses at certain writers, but we have a keen appreciation for high-quality brain candy as well! We are a friendly group mixed with a bit of sharp sarcasm, a sprinkling of green Enabler Dust and a TBR pile a mile high.

If you are slightly toward the snobbish side of the book-lover's spectrum--if you love your Dickens but also love your Nora--then you've come to the right place! Our group is invite-only to preserve the correct mix of people, but if you want to join, drop Suze, Rob or Dragonfly a note and we will review your shelf. If you get a friend invite, accept it and we will invite you to join us! (Please note that none of the admins spends all day, every day online. It may be a few days before we can get back to you. Suze and Dragonfly especially go MIA for various reasons, so please be patient and it will be rewarded!) Also, please do NOT ask for an invitation if you don't plan on regularly posting. It does take us time to review new members, and we love new members who participate, but the posts are visible to all Shelfari members who just want to lurk. :)

BBD Blog: http://brilliantbabes.blogspot.com -- chock full of BBD goodness!

Note for all members: In the past, we have had people confuse "slightly snobby" with "raging literary a-holes." Although we do appreciate a good crack on a bad author, please refrain from knowingly insulting your fellow BBDs. We love Shakespeare, but we hate drama!

Diversity Works 557 books / 823 members / 8649 posts "The most ignorant and hurtful idea of all, of course, is that the entire topic of race and genes and intelligence is off-limits to all right-thinking, compassionate people, just on principle. What's wrong with this, you idiot, is that it's premised on the assupmtion that some races are innately and immutably much less intelligent than others--which, I hate to break it to you, is demonstrably false."
Bruno Maddox in his essay Blinded by Science in Discover magazine, March, 2008

Diversity Works is a where we acknowledge our differences, celebrate our commonalities, and make an honest effort to navigate between the two. We hope the setting here feels safe enough for you to examine, consider, and challenge ideas and thoughts expressed here. It's not about being right, but being heard.

Tell us what you think.

English Majors/Minors 218 books / 313 members / 514 posts This group is for English majors or minors, but anyone is welcome. What I hope to attract with the group title are literature analysts, people who thoroughly enjoy studying novels, short stories, essays, whatever. Maybe I can even lure in some who actually like to peruse a bit of criticism now and then, though I must admit only the most intriguing topics can take me this far.

50 Book Challenge! 4693 books / 4691 members / 31156 posts Welcome to the 50-Book Challenge! We are not listless. In fact, we love lists ...

A list of the books we've been looking forward to, for example, can be found by following this link:

http://astore.amazon.com/allencotrip-20

Our challenge is to read 50 books in one year. OR ... establish a goal for yourself more or less, it's up to you, just because we say 50 books doesn't mean that has to be your goal too.

To join, all you need to do is start a thread, WITH YOUR NAME IN THE SUBJECT OF YOUR ORIGINAL POST, and log your books (with title and author, please.) Reviews are always welcome as well. It is a very good idea to bookmark your post (when in your post, add it to your internet browser's favorites)for quick access for future updates. Things move quickly around here.

If you haven't been keeping track of the books you've read, start when you join.

I enjoy reading your lists, and my TBR pile has grown as a result and I've read books I wouldn't have otherwise (The Hunger Games, I'm talking to you ...)

It doesn't have to be all lists all the time, though ... People enjoy it when you comment on their lists as well, so when you update your list ... take a minute and browse around. You never know what you might find. (Water For Elephants, I'm talking to you.)

I survey the group each year starting in mid-December, until about mid-January then compile the lists and post the results. I look forward to this year's lists, now that the Twilight fervor has died down.

Thanks for being here and have fun. If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to contact me.
NNBR - Not Necessarily Book Related 103 books / 562 members / 14474 posts Oh, come on! we need a place to just chat here, whether or not it's about books.

Religion, politics, recipes, games, restaurant reviews, dinner ideas, WWYD questions, tech recommendations, and whatever else you can think of or want to discuss.

Bitching and moaning are allowed. Bullying, trolling and scams are not.. This forum is not an appropriate place for authors to promote their books (but we'd LOVE to chat with you!) The management thanks you in advance for your cooperation.

A Note about Deleting Posts:
I don't generally delete threads, mostly because I'm pretty much against censorship (unless it becomes a mean, knock down drag out, name calling fight) but also because I believe that it is important to know where the idiots are, so to speak. If I deleted every obnoxious post, new folks would join the group and have no idea that that Person X had a habit of spouting all this nonsense. I think that if you're going to act like an idiot, your stuff should be left up so that everyone can see you for what you are. Forewarned is forearmed, IMO.

Islamic Fiction 26 books / 79 members / 41 posts Captivating tales have been part of the culture of the Muslim world for centuries. Until recently, though, all the stories were told in Arabic, Persian and other Asian languages.

As the number of American Muslims grows, by both birth and conversion, there is a hunger for a new type of fiction. English language Islamic fiction tells the stories of Muslims and their non-Muslim friends and neighbors here in the U.S. No magic lamps or flying carpets. English language Islamic fiction is about the real lives of real people.

"In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.", Mortimer Adler

*This is a group for book lovers who prefer to take an under-promise and over-deliver approach to their reading. It's also for those of us who quake at the thought of "committing" to read 50 books in a twelve month period.

The challenge: Set a goal for yourself to read and enjoy 2 books each month.(If 1 would be a s-t-r-e-t-c-h goal for you, that's great too! If you crave more than 2, go for it. It's your challenge :-)

If you have been keeping track of all that you've read since January 2008, feel free to include those books towards your goal. If you haven't been keeping track, simply begin now.

How it works: Put your name in the subject line of a new post, and start to add your book list. From that point on you can add to your list by replying to the first post in your thread. If you prefer to keep your thread free of others' questions or comments then you may want to include this request in your original post title (e.g. "No comments please"). If you would like questions or comments within your thread, why not include "Comments welcome" in the title? If you feel inspired to write mini-reviews or comments on any book in your list, please do. Whatever feels right for you!

The group shelf:You are also invited to add your 24 + books to the group shelf. If you did write a comment or review please also add this to your book on the shelf. In an effort to keep things simple, we're only using the "Books We've Read" shelf.

Please drop us a note if you have any questions or suggestions for improving the group. We'd love to hear from you!

Books that work well for Reading Groups/Book Clubs 72 books / 229 members / 251 posts Because I love to read, a few years ago I started a neighborhood book club. What books have worked well for your reading group? Which sparked a good discussion? (Sometimes a not-so-good book can make for dynamite interaction around the table). Which books would you recommend for a reading group--and why?

Now--I know all you authors out there will be tempted to add your books to our shelf, but our shelf is for books that have been read by and worked well for reading groups. Resist the urge for self-promotion, please, and I'll try to do the same. :-) (Disclaimer: My club has read one of my books, but that was a special occasion.) Happy reading! (And if you're not in a book club, feel free to join us anyway!)

Dedicated to reading authors who have won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Who are you reading now, and what do you think of these movers and shakers in the world of literature?

From www.nobel.org:
The medal of the Swedish Academy represents a young man sitting under a laurel tree who, enchanted, listens to and writes down the song of the Muse.

The inscription reads:

Inventas vitam juvat excoluisse per artes

loosely translated "And they who bettered life on earth by their newly found mastery."
(Word for word: Inventions enhance life which is beautified through art.)

The words are taken from Vergilius Aeneid, the 6th song, verse 663;

Lo, God-loved poets, men who spake things worthy Phoebus' heart;
and they who bettered life on earth by new-found mastery

The name of the Leaureate is engraved on the plate below the figures, and the text "ACAD. SUEC." stands for the the Swedish Academy.

The Nobel Prize Medal for Literature was designed by Erik Lindberg.

!!!@@@@@@@@@@@@@Love your Life.@@@@@@@@@@@!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve learned that u shouldn’t compare your self,
To the best others can do,
But to the best u can do.
I’ve learned that it’s not what happens to people,
It’s what they do about it.
I’ve learned that no matter how thin u slice it,
There r always two sides.
I’ve learned that u should always leave
Loved once with loving words,
It may be the last time u’ll see them.
I’ve learned that you keep going
Long after u think u cant

I’ve learned that how good a lover is,
They’re going to hurt u every once in a while.
And u must forgive them for that.
I’ve learned that it isn’t always enough to forgive them by others,
Sometimes u have to learn to forgive yourself.
I’ve learned that no matter how bad your heart is broken,
The world doesn’t stop for your grief.
I’ve learned that our background and circumstances may have
Influenced who we are,
But we are responsible for who we become.
I’ve learned that just because two people argue, it doesn’t mean
They don’t love each other
And just because they don’t argue, it doesn’t mean they do.

I’ve learned that sometimes u have to put the individual
Ahead of their actions.
I’ve learned that two people can look at the exact same thing
And see something totally different
I’ve learned that no matter the consequances, those who r honest
With themselves get further in life.
I’ve learned that your life can be changed in a matter of hours
By people who don’t even know u.
I’ve learned that even when u think
You have no more to give,
When a lover cries out to you
You will find the strenght to help

I’ve learned that Reading,Writing, as well as talking,
Can ease emotional pains.
I’ve learned that the people u care most
About in life
Are taken from you too soon
I’ve learned that it’s hard to determine where to draw
A line between being nice
And not hurting people’s feelings
And standing up for what you believe
I’ve learned to love
and be loved.
I’ve learned…..

Off beat (My all time Favorites) 15 books / 9 members / 0 posts Welcome! Whats in a book that makes it interesting.... the cover, the story, the litreture... I have often wondered. I think it is none. Its the feeling that the book leaves in you after you have read that makes it the most wonderful experience. I am no critic, so this group just is not for people who are crazy about the 'Best Sellers'. If you find a book that has touched you, your life or your actions in anyway, I want you to share it with all. Ofcourse there are exceptions, like the know your english, personality development, positive thinking or going ahead in life books that come in dozens these days. Well simple, I exempt them or I do not want them in my group. Happy Sharing, reading and experiencing!

Historical Fiction 949 books / 1405 members / 3976 posts I was shocked there was no "historical fiction" group so I'm going to try this.
Your books can be from any era and style as long as they are historical fiction!
I am always on the lookout for new books so please add/suggest as many as you like!
As you can see from my shelf and the group's shelf we have a loose interpretation of what is "historical fiction" and a varied taste in books.
Questions about how to use shelfari should be adressed to that group please.
Authors are welcome to post, but please do not use this group to advertise for your book unless it caters to our interests!
Another small request from me......Please keep all discussions civil and try to respect other people's views and opinions while posting on this group.
If you decide to join...welcome!

Late Night Bookies 60 books / 78 members / 335 posts The Late Night Bookies is the book club that Optic Junkie and I started up about three years ago. We are located in the Rocky Mountain West in the United States--hot summers and bitter winters...but beautiful mountains and forests and wonderful people!

We called ourselves the Late Night Bookies--because we're pretty much late night people who love to read, our book clubs always go late, late into the evening...(read early morning hours)...and sometimes...if we start reading, we just can't stop until we've reached the end.

We've read a lot of books--had some book swaps, eaten some great food and had some good laughs along the way.

I wanted to share the books that we have read, as well as open up to discussion recommended books for future reading and ideas/recipes for continuing to enhance our book club experience.

I hope you enjoy the visit!

Khaled Hosseini 3 books / 86 members / 12 posts For all the readers who have read 'Kite Runner' and loved Khaled's work... The son of an Afghan diplomat whose family received political asylum in the United States, Hosseini combines the unflinching realism of a war correspondent with the satisfying emotional pull of master storytellers such as Rohinton Mistry. Like the kite that is its central image, the story line of this mesmerizing first novel occasionally dips and seems almost to dive to the ground. But Hosseini ultimately keeps everything airborne until his heartrending conclusion
