Francis Collins is convinced that Genesis can only be poetic and not literal history of origins. He contends for God as author and at the same time supports old earth and big bang as God 's method of creation. I believe that God created in 6 days as did Jesus and the prophets who spoke of Adam...

Excellent read both for scientific understanding and revelations of an agnostic to Christian scientist.

If we want to understand science, we need to read the words of those who have spent their lifetime in scientific studies and application. Frances Collins is the scientist in charge of mapping the human genome. He directed over 2000 scientists over (at least) a decade, world wide, as they worked on the Human Genome Project. It is difficult to get more educated or more experienced on the topic of DNA than Frances Collins is. I believe he deserves our hearing and our respect.

Much of what he wrote was new to me. I have been, admittedly, ignorant when it comes to science, scientific research, and scientific progress. It's been one area I have not been willing to take on, because it has not really interested me and because it seems like such a huge topic.

This book, though, was a good transition for the scientific illiterate who is wanting to know more - particularly wanting to know more about how science and religion can interact. It is easy to read, well laid out for the lay person. Dr. Collins is a devout Christian. I came away from this book with a much better understanding of basic science and a respect for science. As a fundamentalist for much of my life - I have always rejected, downplayed, and even feared science. I see now that these perceptions were based in ignorance.

Francis Collins is convinced that Genesis can only be poetic and not literal history of origins. He contends for God as author and at the same time supports old earth and big bang as God 's method of creation. I believe that God created in 6 days as did Jesus and the prophets who spoke of Adam and the creation as literal. Mr. Collins passed from atheist to believer through the expositions of C.S. Lewis, but could not leave the presumptions of his colleges of science preeminence to further examine the truth through the lens of faith in the holy scriptures.

I only read half the book, because right now it's too much work for me to read non-fiction. It especially felt like a waste of my energy when I understand much of the science and agree that there is no conflict between God and science. What I did read was interesting, however.

Excellent book - I read this and Lee Strobel's book, The Case for a Creator, when I was putting together a Genesis Bible Study.

Very interesting to read a Christian talking about his work in biological sciences and evolutionary biology.

A fantastic book! Not everyone will agree with Francis Collins' as he calls Creationism a "bad idea" and "causing more harm to faith than to science". He also tells the Intelligent Design folks that they are all wet. He settles firmly into a perspective of theistic evolution (what he calls "bio-logos") and basically says all other perspectives don't deal with the cumulative "truth". The truth, as Collins lays it out, is acknowledgment of the Moral Law, which is the most compelling argument for a God (as he sees it) and the nearly irrefutable reliability of evolution as the biological process by which God has implemented his creation. In his opinion, these two truths must be reconciled.

    It raises some interesting questions...

As the head of the human genome project, Collins is a bio-chemist and does the best job I have heard anyone do of addressing the relationship between science and faith.

A good explanation of why it makes sense for a scientist to be a Christian.

Love it ... love it ... love it! God is Great, and there is no separation between Him and science.
