One third of the way through I started thinking, "Why am I reading this crap? This is like a schlock B-movie plot!" But by two thirds of the way through I felt I was reading something much more special than...” see full review » see other reviews » |

“Just not my kind of book.”

And I always try to read the book before watching the movie but unfortunately in this case that didn't happen. And after watching the movie, I really had no desire to read the book. I was not impressed with the movie version. However, I still had the book languishing on my physical book shelf and since I seem to have some kind of hording tendencies in that I can not let a book go without knowing what is between the two covers, I decided to take a chance and read it. Well, I was pleasantly delighted to be pleasantly horrified!
At first I couldn't see how in the world the book could take up the pages with just the 5 people on top of a rounded piece of earth but then I realized that it was more than just some evil plant and it's hungry appetite. It was a study of how each person must face their own personal demons and how well-equipped they are to deal with the harsh realities of survival.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book and will be reading the authors' first novel and looking for more from him. ”
“I had high hopes for this book as it sounded very interesting, and I have heard good things about this author. Immediately I felt like I was reading something that should have been put in the 'Young Adult' section at the library. The characters were boring and forgettable, in fact I got them mixed up at times. The story was pretty cheesy, but could have been made into a real good horror novel if someone else wrote it.”

I'm in the middle of another book at the moment, and while this other book is written very articulately, I like this book better. The writing style of The Ruins is simple and to-the-point, not caught up in itself.
Throughout The Ruins, I found myself trying to figure out how the characters would get out of the situation they were thrust into. Frankly, I didn't expect the ending to be any different. No spoiler alert here, other than your no-nonsense stroll through this book should lead to a no-nonsense ending.
Generally speaking, a good read, no masterpiece, but captivating enough to keep interest.”
“Spooky scary horror novel. Gruesome stuff.”

The author is an excellent storyteller, but I just didn't care for the story. It was a very depressing book.”

That phrase sums up the setting in the book as well as the story itself. This is as bleak a novel as I've read in some time, but it touches all the right nerves for a horror story. While I often sensed what was going to happen ("NO! Don't do that!"), the happening itself was filled with dread and horror.
I thought there were a lot of elements of "Lord of the Flies" here, with a struggle to survive and the toll it takes on relationships.
A very, very good horror novel. Creepy (creeping?) in a subtle way. ”
