One of the few times I've ever said this: "the movie was better than the book". I too expected a lot more from this read after the brilliant first offering from Smith. I was let down.

I thought the concept of the living vines to be an excellent metaphor for cancer. As I read the novel, I thought of the reactions, the denial and finally the acceptance to fate, that friends of mine have had to this disease. I can see anyone in a crisis situation becoming any one of the characters in this book. I see it as a character study more than a horror novel.

I was expecting much more from this read. After all the critical acclaim and the film I thought it would have a lot more depth than I saw. It is essentially a piece about how different personalities react to a stressful situation. Not a "fantastic" piece about monsters and overcoming them.

I have technically been reading this book for months. I just can't get through it. I bought it because I really enjoyed the movie, but I don't feel as if the book is that well written, and the beginning is just dragging for me. It's looking doubtful that I will ever actually finish this book.

There are so many details that are mixed up between the film and book versions, it is almost as if they are two different stories. It's mainly the details. It's all the subtle little details, details, details.
I liked the graphic nature of the movie, but HATED it in general.
I liked the book above average.

You can bet the film version will have a different ending. What kept me with this book was wondering how in fact the author would end it. It seemed inevitable that if he were going to be honest, it would have to end a certain way, but that didn't mean he wouldn't cop out and call in Martians or reveal that it all been a dream. He's an interesting writer who hasn't written his great work yet.

I didn't like this novel at all. The characters stunk.

This was a surprisingly well done book. It lured me in, and felt like a cliche, but it quickly proved itself otherwise. Very well written, very dark...Smith is a force to be reckoned with in this genre.

A great horror novel. Reads like vintage King.
