Shelfari Group Admins 212 books / 11070 members / 8698 posts Welcome all Shelfari group admins! It's about time we created a group just for group admins. This is the place to:

*Offer tips on what does or doesn't work for groups.
*Ask questions about how groups work and what options you have as admins.
*Let us (the Shelfari Team) know what features would be helpful in your groups.
*This group is not a place to advertise your group (or book) to get members--and I will delete discussion threads that are irrelevant.

REMINDER: You can search within the discussion threads in this group by using the "Search Discussions" button on the upper right-hand side of this page

If you have a general question about how to use Shelfari or a problem, please visit the Shelfari Questions group (http://www.shelfari.com/groups/15217/about).

If you want to discuss general site improvements or request features (not relevant to groups), please visit Shelfari Discussions (http://www.shelfari.com/groups/10000/about).

Books Featured on The Daily Show & The Colbert Report 471 books / 293 members / 38 posts
In honor of all the serious authors who make it on these ever increasingly popular parody news shows

The Daily Show is a Peabody and Emmy Award-winning half-hour American comical news television program produced by and run on the Comedy Central cable television network. It has been touted the sharpest political commentary shows on American television.

The Colbert Report is an American satirical television program on Comedy Central that stars comedian Stephen Colbert. It is a spinoff and counterpart of The Daily Show. The Report critiques politics and the media, but focuses on the commentary of Colbert's anchorman character, a right-wing "well-intentioned, poorly informed, high-status idiot" who is inspired by cable news personalities, particularly Bill O'Reilly.

50 Book Challenge! 4880 books / 4821 members / 32974 posts Welcome to the 50-Book Challenge!
We are not listless. In fact, we love lists ...

Many of our lists can be found by using the link below:

http://astore.amazon.com/allencotrip-20

Our challenge is to read 50 books in one year. OR ... establish a goal for yourself more or less, it's up to you, just because we say 50 books doesn't mean that has to be your goal too.

To join, all you need to do is start a thread, WITH YOUR NAME IN THE SUBJECT OF YOUR ORIGINAL POST, and log your books (with title and author, please.) Reviews are always welcome as well. It is a very good idea to bookmark your post (when in your post, add it to your internet browser's favorites)for quick access for future updates. Things move quickly around here.

If you haven't been keeping track of the books you've read, start when you join.

I enjoy reading your lists, and my TBR pile has grown as a result and I've read books I wouldn't have otherwise (The Hunger Games, I'm talking to you ...)

It doesn't have to be all lists all the time, though ... People enjoy it when you comment on their lists as well, so when you update your list ... take a minute and browse around. You never know what you might find. (Water For Elephants, I'm talking to you.)

Books and Information Science 45 books / 17 members / 1 posts Welcome to the Books and Information Science group. Books about books and writers writing about writing are topics for this group. The usage and development of books and the written word over time is an enthralling topic that this group covers. Wikipedia describes information science as an, "interdisciplinary science primarily concerned with the collection, classification, manipulation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information. Information science studies the application and usage of knowledge in organizations, and the interaction between people, organizations and information systems. It is often (mistakenly) considered a branch of computer science. It is actually a broad, interdisciplinary field, incorporating not only aspects of computer science, but also mathematics, library science, cognitive science, and the social sciences." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_science 3/26/08)

Please share historical, technical and fanciful books that touch on information science topics. Including discussion posts, reviews, ratings and tags on the books in this shelf would be great but are not required. Book choices are pretty open ended and include books about electronic publication authoring and indexing. Books about Google, Linux, Web authoring, XML and other technologies for distributing and indexing information would be good to include on this groups shelf.

Fiction and non-fiction books that touch on books, writing, reading, libraries, dictionaries and cataloging would be fun to share in this group. Even a Hemingway Novel that talks about his routine of going to the bar early in the day to write could be included or George Orwell's 1984 novel conveying the crime of owning a book. Sharing books on the history of writing and books is greatly appreciated. Ivan Illich's "In the Vineyard of the Text" and Thomas Cahill's, "How the Irish Saved Civilization" are two wonderful books that talk about medieval scriptoriums. Sharing delightful books like these is what this site is about.

Including science fiction and fantasy novels that touch upon artificial intelligence, information control, and the power of names and words could be a fun section and could grow to be a large part of this groups shelf. The politics of books and the role of the mass media and even Shelfari itself could be a topic for this group.

This groups site can be an interesting experiment and play ground for seeing how a Shelfari book group evolves. Please feel free to join and add books and discussion posts.
Better than Starbucks… if you like good coffee, great books, sharp wit, and people who read 1819 books / 2036 members / 30386 posts Better than Starbucks… if you like good coffee, great books, sharp wit, and people who read
Shakespeare, Dickens, Twain, Marquez, Morrison, Joyce, Faulkner, Cather, Kingsolver and a few hundred other really delicious writers, not to impress strangers, but because they love a good read, then please join us.

We are not a private group, but the administrators will not resist the urge to delete boring and stupid comments. By the same token, personal attacks on young, slow or otherwise disadvantaged players will not be tolerated.

Generally, be nice to other members, but spare not public figures, pop lit superstars, big box stores, politicians and religious leaders. Focus more energy on what is good and even what is great, but feel free to throw a stone when the occasion calls for it.

To steal a phrase: we want to have serious intellectual discussions, but at the same time we want the heat to generate light, not fire....

Welcome!
