The Edgar Sawtelle book was a unigue read, so different from most things I have read. Someone said that it was compared to Hamlet which was a tragedy and it was a tragic novel. Most of Oprah's picks are under depressium circumstances. It was a great book, the author had a great techique of writing that glues you right in but brace yourself for the ending. The narractor is a dealth boy , his family raises and trains a unusual dog breed which is fictious. It takes alot of time training them and they are very expensive. The main characters in the story are Edgar, the boy, his mother and father and his uncle who comes to live with them. Also a main character is the vet that takes care of the dogs. I do not regret reading this book, every book whether its your favorite or otherwise, teaches you many things. So read it, but just be prepared for a much hollow feeling in your soul at the ending.

Jessica, I don't really care about dog training but I have truly enjoyed this book. The characters are fascinating. If you like psychology I think you would like it. The dog breeding ideas are interesting and there are little side stories about specific dogs that I enjoyed. The writing is wonderful! There were many sentences I read over and over just to hear the language. It is not a fast moving plot throughout the entire book but at times it is intrigueing. If you know anything about rural life, you may enjoy it even more -- a focus on land, animals, and isolated people.

Hi Jessica. The book has beautiful writing in it. The relationship between the one dog and the boy is wonderful. Unless you are truly interested in the training of dogs who become "perfect companions" do not read this. There are pages and pages dedicated to this training. The plot line in the story is supposed to be Shakespearian according to Oprah, however, I believe Wroblewski's attempt is weak, some of the characters are not developed enough for you to understand why they did what they did, and I truly felt cheated at then stories ending. This is only my opinion.
