This was an entertaining listen, but I struggled with the plausibility factor. Espionage books where the characters are predicted to behave in only one way to reach an outcome for someone else always seem to fall a bit flat because people are not THAT predictable. The character of 14 year old Julie Getty though was fascinating. I would love to see her in another Baldacci book!

  • Wonder
    • Rated 4 stars

Wonder finds a new niche in children's literature. August (Auggie) Pullman is about to enter 5th grade after being homeschooled all his life. If that weren't traumatic enough throw in the fact that he has horrible facial deformities that are shocking to behold. The principal at his new school enlists the help of 3 students to help Auggie feel welcome and settle in and you can imagine how this might go and not be too far off. Auggie is a strong character who understands the effect he has on people, but that still doesn't make it easy for him. The story follows the school year and is told from the perspective of several of the characters. This is an incredibly strong first novel.

Harlan Coben brings us another suspense, this tie the main character is Megan who on the surface appears to be a typical surburban mom, but 17 previous she was living a completely different life as a dancer. She vanished completely from that life as the same time a man who went missing and remade herself, but the past has come back to haunt her. Was she involved in the case of the missing man?

This has received many rave reviews as a first novel, but I found it to be very stark and rather difficult to follow as an audiobook.

  • Fall from Grace

This latest stand alone from Richard North Patterson is a family saga with a bit of a mystery. Adam Blaine grew up on Marthas Vineyard with a privileged life as the younger and favored son of one of America's most famous writers. The story begins with Adam returning after a selfimposed 10 year exile after a schism with his father ends with his death under mysterious circumstances. Adam is the executor of his father's will and finds the his father has left the bulk of his estate to a young actress and has virtually written his mother out of the will, including the family home which had belonged to her family. Adam begins a quest to find out who's could have killed his father and why his father had rewritten his will. A strong picture of a dysfunctional family.

  • Three Weeks with My Brother

Nicholas Sparks is such a well known writer and this biographical story of his travels with his brother provides some insight as to his life experiences that have helped him to become the sensative writer he is. Alternating between his travelog and autobiographic glimpses from his childhood the story weaves seamlessly together.

  • State of Wonder
    • Rated 4 stars

I was reluctant to read State of Wonders -- the title did't appeal, the cover was boring and it was set in the Amazon which I didn't think I would enjoy -- boy was I wrong!
Dr. Marina Singh is a now pharmacology researcher, but 13 years ago was an OBGYN resident under the tyrannical and scary Dr. Annick Swenson. After a mistake Marina changes career paths and now 13 years later is sent to track down Dr. Swenson who is researching a fertility drug in a remote location on the Amazon and the body of her office made Dr. Anders Eckmann who died while there.
The character development is incredible and the description of the tribe that they live among is wonderful -- so much so that you could easily picture the scenes that are described.
The story is rich in personal growth, mystery and moral issues -- great book for a book club!

  • I Hunt Killers
    • Rated 4 stars

So how crazy would it be to be the teenaged son of the world's worst serial killer? Jasper Dent (Jazz) is the son of Billy Dent who killed 124 people and has now been behind bars for the last 4 years. Jazz grew up knowing about his father's "craft" and was responsible for the organization of the trophies Billy gathered. Jazz lives with his paternal grandmother and you quickly understand why his father was a bit dysfunctional and grandma is now suffering from dementia so Jazz pretty much cares for her.
When a dead body turns up in town Jazz is sure there is another serial killer on the loose and who better to catch him than someone like himself who understands how a serial killer thinks. In fact because he knows exactly how a serial killer thinks he isn't so sure that he doesn't have these tendencies too.
Jazz is aided by his strong girlfriend and his best friend who is a severe hemophiliac.
I will warn you now -- it is an exciting ending and there will be more to come, hopefully soon.
