Your comment re: "logos versus pathos leads me to wonder if you've read Parable of the Sower or even Talents (shall check your shelf in a moment). Lauren Olamina embodies the tension between the two--from her drug-induced hyperempathy syndrome to her insistence on "Earthseed" as the only way--and yet remains a distant character. At any rate, no need to keep up with the readings, so to speak. If we do group reads, it's a group decision, which is necessarily based on people's schedules.Pleased to meet you.
Hello and welcome to Shelfari. I just read your review of Kindred, and quite agree that this is a worthwhile book. I find it curious the question you pose about whether or not Dana is likable. I have thought this about other Butler characters, and wonder why that's important. I think there is a strong streak in her writing to create characters who we can easily be ambivalent so that we stay focused on the issues and subtext rather than them, per se. What do you think? I would like to invite you to join the Octavia Butler Fans group. We are currently discussing Fledgling, but it would be great for you to start a discussion about Kindred.cheers, afton
