Book Dreams

Art is transferring feeling from one heart to another. - Leo Tolstoy

All the titles I’ve listed were once on my shelf, but many have since moved on to new homes. Now I only keep books I think I’ll want to read again, or share with family and friends, or use for reference. I don’t have a “Top Ten” list, but I’ve tagged many books as... more »

Hi Sharon. I haven't been keeping up with my Shelfari listings, or those of my friends, very much this summer. I see you were lukewarm about a Reliable Wife. It just grabbed me, as some books do. Probably didn't hurt that the setting was local. I just finished The Help, which came with glowing recommendations, but didn't grab me as firmly as it did some of my other reading friends. I've been reluctant to read the Guernsey and Potato Peel book, but started it today for my local group and am finding myself zipping along. Looks like you really liked Olive Kitteridge - that may move up on my pile. I hope you're finding something that makes the pages turn fast.

I clearly liked The Cold Dish more than you did. I was fascinated by the Native American spirituality, loved the Longmire character, the relationship between Walt and Henry, the myriad literary references, and the history of the Sharps.

A very nice selection. I have had Hass' volume on my want list for awhile. It won one of the major awards, cannot remember which one, Pulitzer maybe. I love Merrill. Don't believe I have ever read much of Forche. I have a volume of Perillo, but cannot remember much so I'll have to revisit. I am trying to get into Olive Kitteridge which I discovered I had bought some time ago at the library bookstore. Since it has now won the Pulitzer thought I would put it on my immediate list, but I'm having trouble getting into it.

Yes I read Johnny Got His Gun in high school, or maybe as an undergrad. Anyway I read it before the movie came out. I was an amazing piece of fiction. Thinking back, I must have read that, All Quiet on the Western Front, Slaughterhouse-Five and Catch 22 within just a couple years. It probably shaped my attitudes for life.

LOL, Sharon we had mimosas on Tuesday morning - i knew you were watching and celebrating too. Yes, I want to read the Matisse stories, but first I need to get through the Obama book for my local group, and a pedestrian murder mystery by PD James. On second thought, maybe I should just jettison the James...

Your new name is nicer, far more suitable to a dreamy reader, though ISBN was a clever one - so don't feel bad about it. The new one is really lovely.

I spent last night reading and just finished Robin's memoir. I am wiped. What a roll of emotions I went through. Thought it was brilliantly done, and courageous. She lets it all hang out.

What does it take to win a Gastoni?
Well, for starters, you better write a book on a topic I love. Next, your writing style has to be exquisite (to the point of awe and envy). Finally, your story telling has to be transporting. To sum it up, I quote Somerset:

“When I read a book I seem to read it with my eyes only, but now and then I come across a passage, perhaps only a phrase, which has a meaning for me, and it becomes part of me.”

On a more personal note, the time I spent reading and listening to books this year was pure escapism. It felt like I spent most of it in a hospital waiting room (which is not true). When I’d start obsessing about my girl Gracie’s cancer I’d crack a book and ride it hard to block the worst of my fears. At night, when I needed to find a path to sleep, I’d take the easy road and escape down a story line. A good book is a gift.

Our family has so much to be thankful for this year. For starters, Carrie and I have our girl back! She now has about an inch of fine blond hair sticking straight out of her 5 year old head. At school they call her Q-tip. Her teachers call her Q-T-tip. I’ll post a couple holiday pictures of the family up on her website: caringbridge.org/visit/gracegaston

Your friendship is counted among my many blessings. Merry Christmas to you and your family, My best for the New Year, Dave

Tiz the Season. I imagine, like me, you give books. My holiday list keeps getting longer and my holiday budget keeps getting smaller. What's a guy to do? Answer: Ask his stellar and sturdy Shelfarians where they place their orders. I order the majority of my books (for my own consumption) via Amazon Used... but I'm not going to gift a used book (tacky, tacky). So, have you found a place that would offer a deep discount for a volume buy? I'd appreciate you passing on the tip. Thanks, Merry Merry, Dave
