  • The Cat in Art
    • Rated 5 stars

Beautiful paintings throughout history showing the cat. I loved the way most of the artwork didn't have the cat as a central subject, but I had to hunt for the cat in the picture.

  • Paint Radiant Realism in Watercolor, Ink & Colored Pencil
    • Rated 2 stars

This book has some beautiful paintings in it, and the artist goes into detail describing the colors she uses for each individual painting.

However, the book suffers from small pictures that really don't show the point that the artist is trying to illustrate, and also I would have loved her to see more illustrations showing her process from the idea stage to getting the final drawing onto the surface.

  • The Secrets of Skinny Chicks
    • Rated 3 stars

This book is comprised of 50 things a woman can do to be a "skinny chick," based on observations of other thin women and what they do to stay that way.

The first part is the least successful, where the author gives little interviews to 50 skinny chicks and asks them what they eat during a day, and what their exercise routines are. Most of the diets seem like they're exactly the same, without a single vegetarian, which I find odd. The only good part are the little tips, which are expanded on in the second half of the book.

The second half is much better, where the tips each get their own section, and some of the tips are good, though none are ground-breaking or anything I hadn't read before. Also, sometimes the author makes health claims that she doesn't back up, so some of it has to be read with a grain of salt.

I did find this book motivating, and it made me want to lose those few extra pounds that have crept up, so I'm giving it three stars.

  • The Plain Janes
    • Rated 2 stars

This was an okay graphic novel about a teenager who lives in a fictional big city similar to New York, that experiences a terrorist bombing similar to 9/11. Her parents, fearful for their lives, move to a suburban area somewhere else, and Jane has to try to fit in. She becomes involved with a group of other girls, all named Jane, and they beginning creating “guerilla art” in their town. I thought the girl in this story was too perky, it was really hard to relate to her. The story was okay, but I just couldn’t get into the charactes. The other Janes were all stereotypes (the drama nerd, the jock, the brainiac, etc.)

  • This Year I Will...: How to Finally Change a Habit, Keep a Resolution, or Make a Dream Come True
    • Rated 1 stars

God, I really need to stop reading these ridiculous books. This is a book about motivating yourself to finally change the bad habits you've acquired. It's a short book, basically a grab-bag of techniques to try. Yet another of those books where every single person in it had some kind of life-changing event after speaking to the author. There is also too much personal information about the author herself in this book. Maybe she's trying to personalize the problem, but I didn't really care to hear about her own anger-management issues and her husband's pot habits. This one's better left alone.

  • Marilu Henner's Total Health Makeover
    • Rated 2 stars

I would have given this book more stars, because I like Marilu Henner and this book is written in a cheerful, conversational tone that's really down-to-earth, but some of the statements regarding dietary and lifestyle advice are a little out there, and of course not backed up by references. I don't think she's claiming to give medical advice or tell people how to eat, she just states what worked for her. I would say, read it with a big grain of salt, and know that making any of her dietary recommendations are at least a good step in the right direction.

  • Locas in Love (Love and Rockets Collection)
    • Rated 3 stars

I love the Maggie and Hopey comics by Jaime Hernandez, he has an incredible drawing style and the stories are both fantastical and realistic, in a gritty, punk kind of way. This collection is kind of disjointed, with lots of little stories that don't really flow well together, that's why I gave it three stars. There are stories about Rand Race, Maggie's ex-boyfriend, and the loopy Penny Century, but not too much about Hopey and Maggie.

  • The Amber Spyglass
    • Rated 2 stars

I was really disappointed in this third and final volume of the trilogy. The first two books centered more on the characters and developed them more fully, whereas the third book was more about tying all the loose ends together and explaining the full story. Also, I felt detached from the characters in this volume and didn't really care one way or the other what happened to them. At least one of the religious characters could have been eliminated from the whole book and no one would have missed him. The writer gives this big buildup to a supposedly wrenching scene at the end, but I just didn't care anymore. The lead character, Lyra, gives all these impassioned speeches which completely turn people around, which seems a little too trite for me. One bright spot in the book is the writer's vivid description of the world of the dead. It was genuinely creepy and depressing.

  • The 5-Minute Face: The Quick & Easy Makeup Guide for Every Woman
    • Rated 2 stars

This book was a big disappointment to me. I've seen Carmindy do her wizardry on What Not to Wear, and was expecting lots of diagrams and specific information about colors, etc. Instead, Carmindy stays very vague and doesn't answer a lot of the questions I had about makeup and color. For instance, she'll have a formula for "blondes with porcelain skin", yet she never explains what to do if you *don't* have porcelain skin. She never mentions ruddy or blotchy-colored skin and how to deal with that, never mentions freckles and how to choose a foundation based on that, and her blonde section never mentions whether your hair is natural or dyed, which can mean a huge difference in what skin color and cast you might have. She doesn't mention anything about there being different shades of blonde (like golden blonde vs ash -- can you tell I'm blonde?) It's very frustrating. And her description of applying eyeshadow seems very simplistic compared to the gorgeous looks achieved by the models in the photos. The one good thing about the book is at the end, where there's an index of makeup for different looks, and Carmindy names the items, and even breaks them down into more expensive/less expensive categories. I found that to be the most helpful feature.

  • The Writing Diet
    • Rated 1 stars

This is the third or fourth book by Julia Cameron that I've read. I always get roped into reading her books by the promise of inspiration and motivation that the blurb tells me, but once I start reading they're all the same book. After reading this book, which focuses on using "Writing Pages" every morning to free up one's creativity, I was not motivated or inspired, just irritated. Cameron trots out the same tired formula and code words to try to get her readers to feel better about themselves. The book is relentlessly cheerful, with every single case study having their life magically transformed in the most wondrous way. It's just all too saccharine for me, plus she waits til the end and then pushes her ideas and about spirituality and god on us. The best thing I could say about this book was that it was an easy, fast read.
