Welcome to the group based on the book 1001 BOOKS YOU MUST READ BEFORE YOU DIE.
There is a general explanation of the group and some answers to FAQ under the discussion thread GROUP GUIDELINES. The past BOTM can be found pinned to the top for 2010 and 2009 if you want to search discussions you can join in. It will bring the discussions forward if you do.
The books of the month (BOTM) that the group is reading are pinned to the top. August books are
The ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN by Mark Twain
THE KILLER INSIDE ME by Jim Thompson
    VANITY FAIR by Wm Thackeray
We also have a Long Read consisting of books from the list that are greater than a 1000 pages. The group will be starting with WAR AND PEACE by Tolstoy.

The series starts with Hyperion, then The Fall of Hyperion, Endymion and finally The Rise of Endymion. I got the Hyperion and Endymion omnibuses.

I liked it a lot. I particularly enjoyed the first and last in the four book Hyperion/Endymion series. The theme of a manipulative, wide-reaching Catholic Church exploiting wild technologies to maintain control in the face of intervention from the future, I found very interesting. I'm not sure I fully understood the origins or purpose of the Time Tombs though (or whether Simmons simply never really got round to explaining) but that didn't detract from a wild, wild ride for the original pilgrims and subsequent hero, Raul.

    You read them?

Try Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell on tape instead of in print. The book is a natural slow read, but is fantastic on audio. I made it to page 40, gave up, then got the tapes. It made my best-of shelf!

Stuart, lately I have been downloading electronic books through lib.overdrive.com. The books can be copied to many music players, and some can even be burned to cd. I haven't been back to the library for CD's in a couple of months since I started using the service. I don't know if there is a similar service in Scotland.
