Fantastic book. Entertaining, provocative, unforgettable. I've been thinking and talking about it since the moment I started reading.

If an angel were to appear to me and tell me that I would be granted the ability for one year to write like anyone, I would choose to write like Annie Dillard, and especially like she wrote in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. It's a favorite of mine, and one of the few books I return to every few years.

  • Infidel

Infidel is a triumph, an absorbing story that impresses with the author's honesty, equanimity, and endurance. Ayaan Hirsi Ali's account of her incredible journey from childhood in Somalia to adulthood in Holland and America, from unquestioning submission to unfathomable courage, from powerlessness to strength, is also a story of the power of freedom and the importance of values.

  • The Bible (New International Version)
    • Rated 5 stars

I've read the Bible through at least a dozen times, but seldom (if ever) more enjoyably and insightfully than with this volume. Even the most experienced Bible reader will find new beauty and depth in familiar passages placed in the context and order in which they occurred (many of David's psalms, for example, occurring at points in his narrative when they might have been composed, and so on). It's a nearly indispensable part of my library and of my spiritual diet.

I think it was the wonderful 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die by Peter Ackroyd and Peter Boxall that recommended reading Jane Eyre and Rebecca (du Maurier) back-to-back. How fascinating to compare and contrast these great authors' treatments of women facing similar circumstances. Bronte belongs to a different era and class than Du Maurier, but it's hard to imagine two more memorable literary creations than Jane and the nameless second Mrs. de Winter.

  • Cold Mountain
    • Rated 3 stars

I can't think of any other instance in which I thought the movie adaptation of a book to be better than the book itself, but Cold Mountain fits that description. The book is a good one, but drags and becomes repetitive at times (which may be exactly what the author intended, as it does reinforce the mood). The movie corrects that and adds the wonderful, scene-stealing Renee Zellweger as Ruby.

I love books about books. And this is a good one--a book about books and people who love books and people who sell books.

As a novel, this book deserves the attention and acclaim it's received. Dan Brown is very skilled at what he does. Unfortunately, his knowledge of Christianity, Christian history, and Catholicism is shockingly poor. But give him credit: he knows how to write a page-turner.

I will be indebted through eternity to Tickle for her highly usable aid to praying the hours. When I met her at a conference and asked her to sign one of the three volumes in this set, I told her she had had a larger effect on my prayer life than anyone save the brothers of Gethsemani. She responded, “I am in good company, then.”

This book will enable even a novice to pray the hours. I highly recommend it (and the other two volumes in the set).
