My partner and I live in a suburb of Dallas with our two dogs and cats. We're currently working towards the adoption of our first child. My parents and grandparents instilled in me a love of reading from an early age. I've always been an avid science fiction and fantasy fan. I'm an aspiring writer and so far have had two short stories... more »

This first novel in the Vampire Earth series is a great story. Very dark horror aspects, mixed with post-holocaust apocalyptic settings. The main character is very solitary but likable.

Great sci-fi with a flavor of 1800s frontier towns/pirate ships and almost a touch of steam punk (I guess) thrown in. The setting is incredibly original and constantly has you thinking about the implications of such a world, which are conveyed well by the author. Fun, fast-paced adventure plot.

I was bored and disappointed with this Recluce novel. It and the 2nd novel were slow and tedious. The first novel still remains a favorite. I don't think I'll read any further in the series.

A fun swath through Silverberg's Majipoor world, which is an unusual blend of fantasy and high-tech. A series of short stories that span the history of this world. His vast world and timeline create an epic feel that is always welcome to a fantasy or sci-fi fan.

Fun modern fantasy with magic and detective mystery all rolled together. I enjoyed the tv series, and the books seem to have been translated well as they are very similar. A quick read and nothing high brow, I'm still looking forward to the others.

Pullman does have atheist/anti-religious views that come out in this trilogy, but he also has a respect for logic and science which comes across as well and can have a broad appeal to everyone. He encourages the notion of thinking for yourself, something I heartily agree with him on.

Otherwise, a fun modern fantasy adventure in the spirit of the Harry Potter series.

Once again another beautiful historically-inspired fantasy novel from Kay. While Tigana is still the best, this is a close 2nd. The setting is inspired by France/Germany/Italy in the medieval period.

It's been a while since I read this book, but I really enjoyed it. If I recall correctly, it's kind of a industrial/cyberpunk style that is reminiscent of Gibson. I was very disappointed to find that Carter hasn't written anything else. There seems to be a lot of talent there.

While Paolini's books aren't ground breaking in the realm of high fantasy, they are great fun and hold up to many of their peers. And when you consider at what a young age he was when he wrote them (17 I think for the first one!), it's truly impressive what he accomplished.

I love how Vinge describes such a truly advanced race that they are on the verge of being incomprehensible to lower, non-ascended beings such as ourselves. The society he describes proves the point of the concept of a singularity in social development. And his alien races are some of the first I've read that truly come across as non-human, not just fantastical equivalents of human society archetypes.
