My favorite reads are biographies/memoirs and classics. Anyone who has written even one book has accomplished much more than I have, and I admire the author's talent, vision, expression and hard work. I'm not much of a literary critic, so my ratings are simply based on my personal preference. Here's what my stars mean: 5 = books that... more »

I see you have Thomas Jefferson on your shelf. The Chronological Read of American History Group at http://www.shelfari.com/groups/34700/about has selected it as the September read. Hope you can stop in and join the conversation!

Dear BNJ: I was looking for something on Google and found a link to your Shelfari. Thank you so much for your recommendation about Girl Soldier. I am thrilled that it was a blessing and an inspiration to you.
I am afraid that I don't keep up with Shelfari very well, except to try to organize the books I've read on the shelves! But it is a great service.
Take care, and God bless, Faith McDonnell

Hello! I'm new to looking at other's recommendations, so it was interesting to follow this book (You Can Go Home Again) and find someone at Covenant Seminary! A friend of mine used to be in the development office there and now is president of Food for the Hungry. Small world. I look forward to seeing what else is on your shelf. . .

I love your list too! I hear you about the lack of time and the dirth of exciting reading material. I want to run away to Africa or India, never watch TV again, and instead work & talk & cook & take care of my kids & read good books. I know I don't have to run away to Africa to do it, it just sometimes seems like an easier solution.... :) We are doing pretty well, just making our way day by day. I hope you all are well too. Give Hunter a big hug for me.

My first standard for a friendship request is a good shelf. I bend a bit for a Seattlite, someone with a black and white cat OR a picture with a mountain in the background!

I did like Eat, Pray, Love. Not one of my all time favorites, but it was good. I saw her interviewed on Oprah which was interesting and added to the experience of having read her book.
The "shack" in my picture... I have no idea where that even is! It was just a picture from my computer and I haven't gone back in to change it!! : )
    Kinda funny

I enjoy seeing what you are reading. There are several books on your list that I want to read. We are reading The Handmaid's Tale right now for book club and just finished Eat, Pray, Love. Hope your book club is going well.

I guess I understand about All the King's Men...it wasn't required reading for me, and that makes a difference sometimes!

I just skimmed your list and love it that we've read so many of the same books...and also love it that we have totally different opinions about a couple of them. We'll have to talk about All the King's Men and Kite Runner...!

Thanks Jennifer... next time your shopping look into "The Trouble with Islam"... my Uncle Sam recommended it to me, and I think I'll be looking into real soon. I've heard great things about this author's messages on NPR, CSPAN and the sorts. Shelfari is fun.
