This was an entertaining, easy, and disturbing read. The author's childhood was filled with chaos, insanity, and mentally unstable adults, so at times it is fascinating to learn about his unique circumstances, but there are many horrifying scenes that make it difficult to digest. In the midst of reading the story, I discovered an interview with some of the sisters of the real life Finches, and it called into question the reliability and honesty of the stories presented by Burroughs. The family went so far as to sue the author, despite the fact that it would publicly reveal their true identity to the world; no small matter, since it has already caused much embarrassment, humiliation, heartbreak, and anxiety to those family members who chose to read this book. It is troubling and disappointing to think he fabricated some aspects of his memoir. Exaggeration is one thing; over-the-top exaggeration and flat out lies is another thing. The problem is that much of it is in fact true and easily verifiable. As for the rest, who can say what is true and what is false in a he-said-she-said situation? In the end, it didn't leave me with a good impression of the book or the author.

This was a difficult book to read, as there is a great amount of sadness within the story. It was a good read, well-written and unique, though I did not love it as many other readers I know did. It is a heart-wrenching story, I still don't know how to feel after many weeks of finishing it. It is an incredibly original tale of vastly different people from vastly different cultures colliding, to say more would give it away.

A hilarious, original story that fills in the gaps of Jesus Christ's life between his birth and death with a terrific amount of imagination. I cannot say enough about this book, it is so funny, so clever, and I am amazed at the author's ability to balance humor and respect for the subject. Biff, the protagonist, is quite a character, literally and figuratively. I can't wait to read this book again someday.

I strongly disliked the author's style of writing; her prose is simply not my cup of tea. The story is intriguing, it requires a huge suspension of disbelief, which is fine, but in the end, the story left me unsatisfied. The reader deserved more information, more detail, more closure. The characters aren't particularly likable, and worst of all, the author does not use quotation marks when people are speaking. That drove me batty. I really did not like this book, I do not recommend it.

Fascinating story, though hard to read at times due to the suffering and hardship of Henrietta Lacks and her family, but it is rewarding to know her story and her identity have been given the acknowledgment so richly deserved.

Heartbreaking but thoroughly engaging story. I loved Enzo so much. This book is for anyone facing a monumental struggle and needs inspiration to never, never, never, never give up. Well worth reading.

I've been reading a lot of fiction recently, but this story grabbed me and held me like no other in quite a while. Kimberly Chang's story is so compelling, full of triumphs and heartaches, sorrow and perseverance. Life handed her more lemons (and roaches) than any young girl should endure, but she never complained or bemoaned her fate. She focused on her dreams and her goals through sheer determination, hard work, and by using the brains she was lucky enough to be born with. I loved this book and could not put it down.

It's hard for me to say why I loved it so much. I thought it was well-written, I cared about the characters, I was so curious to see how it ended. Maybe because I'm such a fan of Kerouac's "On the Road" that this spoke to me in a similar fashion - self-discovery during a road trip.

Reading it as an adult made me frustrated with Holden's immaturity, yet sympathtic to his pain and troubles. I felt like he needed a lot of love and attention from his folks and professionals in the mental health field. He is a very interesting young man, and while sometimes he was very irritating, there were moments where his senstivity were very touching. I think everyone should read this once as a teenager and once as an adult to notice how one's perspective, empathy, and opinion of Holden change with one's age.

I'd give this 3 1/2 stars, so I'm rounding up. It's an interesting story, I've never read a book that was written all in letters from one person to another. The authors do a great job of holding your interest, and I especially appreciated learning more about the sacrifices and suffering of European citizens who lived through WWII. Americans have no idea how good they've had it.

One quibble with the story - I found the relationship between the main character and her ultimate suitor came out of nowhere. Wish there had been a better job of setting up that romance.
