Hi everybody,

I am an English teacher from the Netherlands and I love reading (and writing as well). I read everything and anything from cereal boxes to 19th century literature and anything in between. I like talking with people about books we have read and that's why I love being here.

Most people read Stephen King because of the thrill of reading a good horror story. I have always liked him because he can write great stories, period. So I have never been particularly attracted to the horror part of things. It's the same with this novel.
Although there are some pretty gory scenes here and there, it's not particularly a horror novel. There's a bit of fantasy/romance/horror/adventure, but the reason I liked reading it most, was because of the description of the early sixties. I myself was born in the fifties, so I can remember a lot of the things that were happening then and about the way people lived in particular. I didn't grow up in America, but the similarities with where I live are great and for me it was one big trip down memory lane.
I loved the story and won't give away any spoilers for any of you out there who are still going to read it. One of SK's best.

I wonderful ghost story. Not blood and gore but the shiver-down-the-spine story. The atmosphere in the story is wonderfully well written and the book has only one shortcoming. It's too short.

A wonderful book for any book lover. Susan Hill describes a year reading from home. She decided to just browse through books she already possessed and decided not to buy anything new that year. Every chapter she wrote is a small adventure into the world of books and writing. For me as a great hoarder of books also, it was so very recognisable. This will be one of those books i read an re-read, because something new can be found it it every time.

I very readable account of life in the 19th century. I'm sure there are many more scholarly and better works around, but for someone who wants to get to know a bit about the era I can definitely recommend it.

Very amusing, but also very true if taken with a pinch of salt. I enjoyed it very much.

This book just made me sad, sad, sad. No matter what everybody else says about it being a great love story, when I had finished it I felt really bad. Must have been a good book then, to do that to me.

I you like reading Charles Dickens and are interested in the 19th century, you will definitely like this book. It's rather slow-paced and I always like that, however, the main characters were a bit flat. I never really got into them or liked them very much, hence the three stars.

Nice thriller, but nothing really world shattering. Too many cliffhangers, one at the end of nearly every chapter, makes you want to go on reading, but in the end it's just a little trick which leaves you rather disappointed in the end. Still, I enjoyed reading it.
