Why did I pick up this series?! I can't get anything done, the house has fallen apart and I cook with one hand on the spoon and the other holds the book. I even took this to Jazz Fest (though I didn't read too much). This is not heavy hitting literature and there are few real life lessons, other than the feudal system pretty much sucked all around, but the book is so much good fun and perfectly paced with short character and action driven chapters. Already starting the next one . . . my poor house.

The novel is set in a Catholic boys' school in modern day Ireland and I'm not giving anything away by staying that Skippy dies in the first few pages. The story moves forward and backwards, fleshing out Skippy and his fellow students, teachers, and many others (it is over 600 pages after all). What I liked: there's a lot of story and Murray writes it well. I enjoyed the straightforward prose alternated with dreaming, drugged out interludes. What I didn't like: teenage characters with adult insight. While I did buy that all the teenagers dealt with sex, violence, eating issues, pregnancy, etc., many of them handled the issues like 30 somethings. But the main problem was, for me, the heavy-handed, neatly wrapped up, karmac ending (specifically with the teacher, Howard and Father Green). It just didn't ring true.

Strongest when the author isn't fixated on herself.

Some solid ideas, neatly packaged. A good primer for beginners.

Sloane is hilarious without being over the top and sweet without being cloying.

I consider myself a huge Sedaris fan but this one was a struggle. These "fables" would have been too dark and twisted even for the Brothers Grimm. While they were terribly clever, the tragedy and horror was relentless (especially the Sheep & Crow story). Still, Sedaris is a brave writer to venture outside his recognized area but as a long time reader, I wonder for his mental health.

Murakami requires quite a time investment and in the end, I was left wondering if it was worth it. Murakami's strengths lay in his factual characters, such as everything involving the Lieutenant, where Murakami breaths life and tension into history. However, his weaknesses including draggy plots and the persistent inclusion of every bit of minutia into the storyline. For example, when describing how two people were supposed to meet on a Sunday but a train accident caused them to met on a Monday. Just another bit of unnecessary information. This is a solid novel falling short of greatness.

What a terrible person and a terrible book. Everyone in this books is PERFECTLY shallow and self-centered. I especially loved the section where the author described worried over paying for her daughter's expensive, exclusive private school and then four paragraphs later noted her "newly bought sheepskin jacket." This woman is an idiot. Do you need to read a book about rich people and their "troubles?" Than this is the book for you.
