Nurril

A College student from Singapore. My mom developed a fond reading habit in me since I was a child and that probably explains why I have been taking literature as an examination subject since I was 13.

Im rather animated as a person and reading serves as a form of escape from the realities of the world. Not much of a non-fictional...more »

Hi Nurril, sorry it has taken me a couple of dayst to get back to you. What great books you have chosen! Diary of Anne Frank is a very moving book, the actual diary of a teenage Jewish girl who is hidden in an attic, along with others, for years to protect them from Nazi's. Could you imagine spending your teen years living only in a cramped attic, with little food and no privacy and fear every day? I couldn't but the book is amazing. To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my favorite books. It tells a story of one of America's worst sins, the dangerous bigotry of the South. The story is told in the voice of a young girl (a tomboy) named Scout, as her father is a lawyer chosen to defend a black man accused of a crime he didn't commit. Scout is at times humorous but the book is a masterfully written drama that, when published, shook up the American people with its moral. It is mandatory reading in American High Schools today. After looking at your shelf I would also suggest Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (I liked it even more than The Kite Runner). I would also suggest Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, a YA book by a Canadian author and I would say my very favorite YA book. Just a few other great books: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Life Of Pi by Yann Martel, any book by Fannie Flagg (a good one to start with is Fried Green Tomatos At The Wistle Stop Cafe) and if you are a fan of Sophie Kinsella I would also try books by Meg Cabot.
