    Fav passage (pg.44):
"It's all true, thought the man. Just like Lord of the Rings. Fantasy creatures. All true.

Then the island exploded, and the man stopped worrying about fantasy creatures and began worrying about his trousers, which had just caught fire."

  • The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks

Review: Normally I'll rave about E. Lockhart's quirky humor novels, but I didn't like this one. Read about 100 pages and folded. The narration switches between Frankie and the third person which creates the notion of a ghastly parable.

  • Oh My Goth
    • Rated 4 stars

Booktalk: Gone are the days when goth typically consisted of black eyeliner, black t-shirt, black pants, and black boots, frequently worn despite summer's stifling heat. Nowadays you can mix-n-match all types of apparel to create: Oriental Goth//Diva Goth//Dark Fairy Goth//Cyber Goth//Egyptian Goth//Vampire Goth//Punk Goth. Jade Leigh is punk goth, an outsider with few friends, and misunderstood. Jade is also at the bottom of the HS food chain and ostracized by its general population. Sent to the principal's office (once again), Jade is sentenced to accompany the principal on a field trip. To her horror Jade discovers that her nemesis, the popular the beautiful, Mercedes is to share her punishment. Both ladies are ordered to a non-descript building where they are forced to enter a virtual reality game. Within this realm Goth is the norm. *screams* Oh yes, EVERYONE is goth. In addition to these outlandish fashion changes, Jade and Mercedes have also swapped each others social status. Jade is now admired and adored while Mercedes battles her frustration with falling from fame. Besides facing their worst fears, the duo must put aside their ill will in order to work together if they are to ever exit this new hell. Notes: Although the storylines are predictable and preposterous and the plot's moral dilemmas may seem too blatant, the self-reflection created by the outrageous drama should promote positive discussion in teen book groups. Never thought being goth could be "fright." Kudos to the Internet Generation for making it even more interesting and often for adults to raise their brows.

  • Big Fat Manifesto
    • Rated 5 stars

Booktalk: "A study found that people would rather give up a year of life than be fat. Half of thousands of people asked in a survey agreed they would rather live a shorter amount of time thin than be fat. In fact, 15 percent said they'd give up ten years or more of life to avoid obesity." Are you part of the 15 percent who would choose a shorter life too? Well, Jamie Carcaterra is not. Jamie Carcaterra already knows what it's like to be fat and she's about to let the world know. From investigating bariatric surgery to infiltrating designer clothing stores, Jamie exposes thin thinking in her newspaper column FAT GIRL. As her column begins to receive national infamy, Jamie realizes she'll have to decide which battles are worth the fight. Big Fat Manifesto will have you questioning whether or not size matters. - booktalk by Amanda Barnhart

Brief Synops: Junior's Native American family is dirt poor. Which wouldn't make him a total social outcast if he wasn't also near-and-far-sighted, scrawny, and verbally prone to lisping and stuttering. Although these physical features make him unique, his actions set him apart from the rest of the reservation community. Junior expects more from life than poverty and transfers to an all white high school where the textbooks aren't decades old and students don't partake in fisticuffs on a daily basis. He'll battle the pangs of friendship, romance, and loss while proving to himself and his community that everyone is entitled to seek a better future.

Notes: This will definitely please RA staff needing humor titles for teens plus it comes with cartoons :D ATDPTI sheds the illusion of preconceived granduer for reservation life in a humorous and nonconfrontational manner, making this little gem by far my favorite read of '07. Recommends: American Born Chinese

Fav Quotes: "Poverty doesn't give you strength or teach you lessons about perserverance. No, poverty only teaches you how to be poor."

  • Rebel Angels
    • Rated 4 stars

Brief Synops: Now that the runes are broken, the magic in the Realms is wild and free to be claimed by anyone. To keep thier power Gemma, Felicity, and Anne must find "the temple" and bind the magic before any of the Realm's creatures try to overtake the beauty of the Realms. They will have to decide whom to trust and who might be Circe: the Rakshana, The Order, Ms. McCleethy, Kartik, Pippa.

Notes: I listened to this on audio, regardless of not liking the first, A Great and Terrible Beauty. The cover lured me with notions of dark fantasy and strong female characters; I'm a sucker for great looking covers. I found myself continuously annoyed with Gemma's wishy washy decisions, especially those made while in the Relams. However, by the end of Rebel Angels Gemma's character becomes much more self-assured, which surprisingly leaves me eagerly awaiting the next installment, and its book cover :)
