“Anomaly indeed! This massive graphic novel (boasting over 368 pages and measuring over 32 inches across when fully opened!) showcases some fantastic artwork and layout but features a story and dialogue that seem to lifted from a late seventies sci-fi tv pilot. The plot is simple enough: the year is 2717 and Earth is well into the so-called 3rd Golden Age. Mankind has broken the surly bonds of terra firma and forged a star-spanning empire, ruled over by the Conglomerate. The Conglomerate is an amalgamation of national governments and corporations that manages the Earth and its technology like a multinational business company. At the top of this hierarchy are the Shareholders, the ruling elite of the Conglomerate. The Enforcers are the military branch of the Conglomerate, enforcing its will and ruthlessly attacking its enemies both within and without. Finally, at the very bottom are the Menials, humans who a merely eking out an existence under the shadow of the Conglomerate and who are treated as little more than slaves. Eager to change the Conglomerate's profit-driven ruthlessness, a young woman named Samantha offers to lead a peaceful contact mission to the world know as Anomaly. Accompanying her is a fellow Shareholder (and true believer) Jasson and a disgraced former Enforcer named Jon. What none of them realize is that the entire mission has been set up to fail; the Conglomerate has dispatched count less missions to Anomaly and not one has been heard or seen from again. Worse still, Samatha's team has a mole working for one of the other Shareholders who there to sabotage the mission and make sure none of the team makes it out alive. But Sam and co some find themselves in more dire straights that the Machiavellian schemes of the Shareholders. What they find on Anomaly is a planet torn by war (primarily between the human clans of The People and the feral and orc-like Kindred referred to as the Muties), where high technology is rendered useless, and both the natives and the fauna are completely hostile. The artwork does an excellent job conveying the epic scope of this story -- there are some gorgeous two-page spreads (which is really saying something given the size of this tome!) Many of the panels look like full color story boards, showing some great action scenes and artistic special effects. Unfortunately, the artwork is undone somewhat by the clunky dialogue and cliched archetypes. All the familiar genre tropes are present here. Brash, disgraced man-of-action? Check. Attractive learned female love interest? Check. Plucky comic relief? Check. Robot side-kick? Check and mate. While this story is not all that ground breaking (using themes and concepts seen in other sci-fi works), the artwork elevates this story from cliched mundanity to something truly epic. This exercise in style over substance comes highly recommended to fans of great art and layout. Those looking for originality may want to look elsewhere. ”(read full review)

“A truly massive tome (boasting over 400 pages) that collects the first four comic book stories of the Mass Effect series into a graphic novel format. The stories present a wide range of tales with most of them detailing events set prior to Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, with most of them presenting events only briefly referred to in the games. The first story, entitled Redemption, details Liara's attempts to recover Shepards body from the Collectors and turn it over to Cerberus, running afoul of the Shadow Broker in the process. Evolution presents the Illusive Man's origins (and a bit of Saren's as well) and shows why he is so driven to advance humanity's cause and defeat the Reapers. Invasion, the most epic of the stories here, shows how Cerberus (thru deceit and guile) gains control of Omega and then forces Aria to flee to the Citadel. Finally, Homeworlds presents a series of one-shots expanding the backgrounds of major players in the game, including James Vega, Garrus, Tali, and Liara; timeline wise, these stories cover the length and breadth of the Mass Effect universe, with Tali's story set just prior to Mass Effect 1, Garrus's set prior to Mass Effect 2, and Vega's and Liara's set prior to Mass Effect 3. The book ends with three rarely seen short stories, Incursion, Inquisition (featuring C-Sec Commander Bailey), and Conviction. Each story is accompanied by annotations from the series's artists and writers offering their observations and creative insights. While some readers have complained that many of these tidbits offer spoilers (discussing actions and characters that appear on the next page or even over the next few pages), this only seemed to be a problem in the Homeworld: James Vega story; all the others offered comments and observations relevant to the page on which they appeared (and thus no spoilers). Overall, this was a highly imaginative set of stories that stayed true to the look and feel of the Mass Effect universe. Fans of Aria T'Lok should note that the queen of Omega appears through out, featuring prominently in Invasion and the short story Incursion, with a gorgeous full page image showing the deadly asari in all her biotic fury appearing near the end of the book. Each section is prefaced by a cover image from that series, and here the artwork is draw dropping. There are some excellent covers featuring Liara, Tali, Garrus, and Aria. Overall, an excellent read and a worthy edition to the Mass Effect universe and one that comes highly recommended to fans and non fans alike. ”(read full review)

“The Mass Effect trilogy stands as one of the greatest and most immersive science fiction universes ever created. Part of its appeal is due in no small part to the ground breaking visuals and designs seen in the games. This book presents a broad sweep of the behind the scenes artwork, concepts, and character development and design. The book is divided into three sections, each covering Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Each section showcases artwork and concepts for that game with comments and observations by the developers scattered throughout. Fans will find the first section the most interesting, as the devs discuss some of their early concepts for Shepard, Saren, and the various alien races (asarii, krogan, etc). Of particular note are the design concepts for the Citadel, the Normandy, and the Mako ACP. Section two details development of the second game, focusing on new characters for the game as well as showing some design updates to some returning favorites (notably Tali and Garrus). There are also some very nice full page paintings of several characters, including Miranda, Garrus, Tali, Grunt, and Legion - the level of detail is amazing! Section three naturally covers the third game, with emphasis on various Reaper designs and environ concepts for the war ravaged planets seen in the game including Earth, Tuchanka, and Thessia. Of particular note is the artwork showing concepts for Cerberus Headquarters (a perfect villains lair!) While certainly a feast for the eyes, the book is a let down in one respect - some of the devs comments of some of the art pieces and concepts are frustrating brief and vague (I would have loved for the developers to have expounded on some of the ideas seen here!) To be sure, this book excels for what it is - an artbook - and on those merits alone, it comes highly recommended for fans of Mass Effect and fantastic visual design. ”(read full review)
