Sorry to reply so late. I haven't been on the site for quite a while. I really enjoy the stories in this book. They are touching, funny, inspirational, and relatable on so many different levels. Every now and then I pick it up and read a story or two. I really hope you get it. I had no idea it was out of print. Wow! Let me know when you get your hands on it. If you weren't so far away I'd lend you mine :)

I know that I'm super late getting back to you on my favorite Nalo Hopkinson book-I would have to say that it would be between Brown Girl and Skin Folk, but I love all her stuff. The anthologies that she's edited are good too (Whispers From the Cotton Tree Root and Mojo), and I've been wanting to read So Long Been Dreaming in addition to her latest novel New Moon Daughter.

Hello dear member of the Black Feminist/Womanist Literature group! It's J., the admin., and I'm writing to inform you of the group's new look! (And it goes beyond the change in our group picture, though it is nice, don't you agree?) :) What we're discussing now: Patricia Hill Collins' Black Feminist Thought, Toni Morrison's Sula for our July read, our little BIG Read: 7 short stories in 7 days to begin later this month, the National Black Arts Festival where Alice Walker and Pearl Cleage are featured speakers, and more!

We'll soon have a group blog up and running, will begin profiling the uberly dynamic authors within our own group, discussing women's/girls action coalitions in your city, reviving some of our good ol' threads, etc.

I challenge everyone to invite at least one friend (already a member of shelfari or otherwise) to join the Black Feminist/Womanist Literature group and to log in at least bi-weekly. (Though weekly would be wonderful!) And I pledge to do the same.

And did you know that Toni Morrison's new novel, A Mercy, is due to be released in November? Ah, you would if you'd visited our group page! (No, actually, I haven't posted this information. lol) But do stop by and fall into the purple haze that is extraordinary literature by feminists of color!

    Love, Jaya

I'm old school, I still like to hold the book in my hands..put it down, pick it up and continue. My late mother is responsible for my love of reading. She "made" me learn to read before I started school, by the time I was in the 6th grade I read on a 12th grade level. In the 6th grade I read the Iliad & the Odyssey something my teacher didn't think I could comprehend but I showed her! I used to live around the corner from a Library and would spend my summer days inside reading. I am so thankful she opened that world up to me. Another good series to read is the Left Behind series by Tim Lahaye and Jerry Jenkins. It is a series of books that is about those who were left behind after the Rapture....they go thru the Glorious Appearing. Christian Fiction but good reads nontheless. When I need a quick read I will read one of those ghetto novels(not my favorite, but will read them when I am bored)Black Expressions is a good source of African American literature. Kimberla Lawson Roby is one of my favorite authors her Curtis Black series is off the chain. Mary Monroe is another great author. Keep on Reading gurl!!
