This is a book that I hated to finish. Fantastic characters, twists and turns in the plot, but how can you go wrong with a main character who at age 11 is initiated into adulthood when he is taken by his book-loving father to the catacombs of a orphan books in need of an owner and his son selects: The Shadow of the Wind and let the games begin!
I am feeling that it might be time to read it again.

I have read many Anita Shreve novels. My book club began with her work, The Weight of Water was terrific. She seems to be able to publish one a year and that might be why the more recent works are not as satisfying.
I liked the conflict here and the character's dilemma but it moves too quickly to reach the end, to wrap everything up neatly as if she's hoping that this one gets picked up for a movie.
Not a slam dunk for me.

I can't recommend this one. I've read other books about Jews growing up in very strict Orthodox homes who have left the fold and they seemed to be more insightful and more global.
This author needs time to see his experience as part of a larger canvas.
I actually found it too whinny.
I would recommend Katterskill by Allegra Goodman.

I am reading this book on my Kindle. It's a perfect book to break in this new way of reading. Coming to this book as a veteran teacher and one who believes that we don't give education enough true support here and everywhere, Greg Mortenson is a true hero for me and I try not to read this book too quickly. I don't want it to end. I am sure as I end this book that I will want to support him. I'm finished. As I read the last paragraph, I moved to his website and made a donation to his cause. I wish I could do more. I'm not that brave to offer my services. But he's a true hero.
