I used to hate reading. I avoided reading at all costs and I can count the number of books I read in high school on one hand. (I read Cliff Notes to help me pass my book tests.) It wasn't until I discovered Mary Higgins Clark that I started to somewhat enjoy reading. I started to enjoy reading even more so when I read the Harry Potter series... more »

I have to admit that the book seemed a little slow, but I still enjoyed it. I look forward to the second book because I think it will be faster paced now that most of the background to the story is out of the way.

I really enjoy the forensics and details of Patricia Cornwell's stories. And, All That Remains was no different. The story was very gripping and I didn't want to put the book down. I didn't suspect who the killer was until near the end and the journey to get to the knowledge of who the killer was didn't seem far-fetched, which is something I like and helps make the story believable.

My only complaint about her books is the profanity. Thankfully, however, there aren't a ton of f-bombs, only one in this book and I think it's the first I've encountered in her stories.

  • River Secrets
    • Rated 4 stars

Just like with The Goose Girl and Enna Burning, it took me a couple of chapters to get into River Secrets. Once I got into the story, I thought it was very entertaining. I really enjoyed exploring the water-speaking element of the story and seeing more of the wind- and fire-speaking elements explored in The Goose Girl and Enna Burning. It was interesting to see how all three languages worked together.

I loved that the story was from Razo's point-of-view and I'm glad Enna was still a major part of the story. Razo first appears in The Goose Girl and you get to know him a little better in Enna Burning, but obviously not nearly as much as you do in River Secrets. He's a great character and seeing things through his perspective was not only enlightening but entertaining as well.

  • Catching Fire
    • Rated 5 stars

Just like its predecessor, I couldn't put Catching Fire down. Now that I'm done with it, I feel so cut off because I want to know how to the story's going to end. At this point, I'm not sure how I want it to end as far as the relationship aspect of the story's concerned. I just know I want the Capitol obliterated.

  • Shiver
    • Rated 5 stars

I absolutely loved Shiver. This book has earned a place on my Favorites shelf. Even though the story seemed kind of slow at first, I was still hooked from the beginning because of the characters. Grace and Sam just made the story seem so real. I love that the book changed from Grace's point-of-view to Sam's and vice versa. I think the change in point-of-view between the two main characters was the only thing that Twilight was missing until Stephenie Meyer started to write Midnight Sun. If you love Twilight, you'll love Shiver.

I didn't have high expectations for this book because it was written by a local author. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the story and I enjoyed seeing the main character (Jory) grow. It was a little too close for comfort with a few of the messages, but I think that helped me identify with Jory a little more.

I loved that Salter used humor to convey all the embarrassing moments felt during high school. Even though you just wanted to give Jory a huge hug because of all the mishaps she was going through, you couldn't help but laugh during some of her more overly dramatic thoughts and embarrassing moments.

  • The Time Traveler's Wife
    • Rated 3 stars

I'm torn with The Time Traveler's Wife. I want to give it a four-star rating, but I just can't because of three things. (The third reason contains spoilers.)

First, I'm not a big fan of profanity, especially when the profanity is the F-word. I'll read books with language in it and try to skip over the words as best I can, but the language usually keeps me from enjoying the book as much as I could've if it weren't there in the first place.

Second, I'm not a fan of gratuitous sex. I don't need to know everything that's done during the sex act. I don't mind knowing that the characters are having or had sex; I just don't want to know what he did to pleasure her or she did to pleasure him. At that point, I feel like the book becomes more of a sex story than a love story. It feels as though the characters lust after each other rather than really love each other. In Henry and Clare's case, I do feel like they truly loved each other, but there's more to a relationship than sex and I wanted to see those aspects explored more.

Third, I hated the ending. It bugged me that Henry told Clare not to wait for him after he died, but then told her that he sees her when she's 82. Of course she's going to wait for him armed with that knowledge! She'd been waiting for him her entire life. He just needed to let it happen like so many other things did during his and Clare's life.

Those three things keep me from knowing that I'll read the story again. At this point, I may or may not; I'm just not sure. And, that's what determines whether a book deserves a four-star rating in my opinion. However, I did like the story most of the time, so I do recommend it to others as you may not have the same objections as I do. And, because I did enjoy the story most of the time, I’d still like to see the movie as long as it doesn’t contain nudity or language.

PS - I loved the movie! There were no F-words and the sex wasn't very explicit. I also loved how the ending was changed and wish that the ending to the book had been the way it was depicted in the movie instead.

  • Enna Burning
    • Rated 4 stars

Many of my friends have said they had a hard time getting into Enna Burning, so they didn't finish it. All I can say is that they missed out on a very good book. I really enjoyed Enna Burning. I enjoyed seeing Isi from another perspective and getting to know Enna more. I also enjoyed the fire-speaking aspect of the book. I look forward to reading River Secrets.

  • The Goose Girl
    • Rated 4 stars

I really enjoyed Shannon Hale's interpretation of The Goose Girl. I wasn't really familiar with this fairy tale. I wanted to know more about the original fairy tale, so I looked up information about the version written by the Brothers Grimm. I wouldn't even mind reading the original version now because of this version. I look forward to reading the other books in this series, especially since they aren't retellings of fairy tales.

  • City of Ashes
    • Rated 5 stars

City of Ashes is just as intense as City of Bones. At this point, I can't wait until I read and finish City of Glass, so I know what happens. I'm starting to see how things will turn out with the foreshadowing, but it'll be exciting to see them take place. Cassandra Clare has created an amazing world of intensity, suspense, drama, love, magic, fantasy, etc.
