Let's see, I like a lot of stuff, you'll have to forgive me. I like Languages. In fact I'm a linguistics major. I specialise in Germanic and Romance languages as well as phonetics and phonology. I'm big into historical and comparative linguistics.
I also study culture, and am also an anthropology major. Though in that field I'm mostly... more »

Sounds great. I just promoted you within the group. You're welcome to do whatever. Please feel free to inject commentary, study ideas, linguistics talk, and so forth. I'll be posting my study notes and questions that arise as I read; if anything triggers a parallel discussion in your mind, please get it out there and help me to learn!

By the way, I noticed you used the word "specialise" above-- is that a spelling of choice for you? Just curious since you're in Philly. I think my only concession to British spelling is "grey", although I'm often tempted to throw the "u" into color or neighbor.

Thank you. Questions answered -most appreciated!
When my own group had new members added, the Shelfari notification system had a major glitch. It was two weeks before I was alerted to their presence. Ah, the frustrations of Shelfari...
Thank you so much for the book recommendations specific to my situation. That is invaluable advice when someone actually knows what they are talking about -and lives in the area. Part of my family lineage is Pennsylvania Dutch, but not Amish. Someone mentioned once that the Penn Dutch way of life was in the “death rattles” stage. Hopefully with the study and preservation of the culture (including language) that will never happen.
    Thanks again.

    Hey Admin! :)
Not to bother too much (you are probably smack in the middle of finals)
Your Comparative and Historical Linguistics group is active.
Before we start running amok like crazy flying monkeys, would you mind helping us out with some definition input?
    Thank you.
    :)

Right, but I'd imagine there are quite a few cultural differences between 700 and 1066 AD? Maybe there aren't, I have no idea. I'm just thinking of Ecce Romani, which centers around one family. Do we know enough about how a typical family of that time would have lived to create the same kind of narrative?
