my shelves are so overloaded with books that i tend to get the majority of my information through the internet and various media now.

i love that now you can get information without taking up (physical) space. i refrain from buying more physical books unless it's compelling enough to me and justifies a purchase. heck, i still have a... more »

  • The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls
    • Rated 5 stars

this is considered emilie autumn's first officially published book. accordingly, "the asylum for wayward victorian girls" is a psychological thriller that blends together an imaginative tale of a girl facing particularly unfortunate circumstances revolving around the brutalities of a fictional "modern" victorian society with an autobiographical account of the author's contemporary struggles around the time of her treatment in a mental institute. it also contains a few other do-it-yourself tidbits scattered around, eg. a few recipes and a special label we are encouraged to copy, print and cut-out.

first published in 2009, this hardbound is colourfully illustrated with personal graphics, drawings and photos that entertain and captivate the reader to move along and explore every page of the harrowing journey.the first print edition is 8.5" wide and just under 12" tall. it nearly weighs five pounds with 266 pages. there is a 2nd edition with an autographed bookplate and additional material, which is currently in its 3rd print.

addressing current conventions and with a particular eye towards gender-bias, the personal stories draw parallels between these two eras - of modern times and the victorian era. sad and tragic outcomes of downcast victims deemed as mentally-ill are a by-product of worse treatment set forth, originating from ever-present societal stigmas, prejudices, misunderstandings, and abuse. the awareness of how things are in society - which infers that nothing has necessarily changed from its cyclical past - is in itself a necessary impetus for its transcendence beyond constant and current issues. despite it all, there is a hint of recurring theme - a possible message of empowerment exists through willful choice of acceptance in turning around what is deemed as weakness into strength.

the book is a colourful and immersive read with many, many facets to bewitch the reader. i recommend it to any fan, muffin or plague rat of emilie autumn.

level 26 is a suspenseful adventure. it has its moments of intrigue, moments i could care less about, and details that raise my curiosity. many of the places the story goes exists in real life.

one minor thing about the narration that bugged me is where i spotted a few redundancies. i already got the point yet it gets elaborated further unnecessarily.

also certain parts sound preachy or dogmatic declaring that something is sick. sometimes it's nice for the reader to interpret it on his/her own and not told what it is. also, it's stating the obvious for some.

the 'cyberbridges' was a compelling component to this and i wish there had been more of them. i laugh at the usage of 'cyber', but 'cyberspace' was used probably only once or twice in the book.

i'm unsure if the term 'digi-novel' will take off but it seems a better name for this media could probably be found. ::shrugs:: but it's a great idea to combine various technologies in telling a story. kudos to anthony e. zuiker for his efforts head-on.

sure the tech is pretty much fake hollywood tech where proposterous things happen. for instance, sqweegle looking at the accident though a perfectly positioned 10fwy traffic cam at the precise time and the range of video transmisssion of wireless cameras is questionable. you can't really zoom into an image and enhance it to a perfectly clear image. mistaking the distinctive shape of the matterhorn with an actual snowy mountain in the southern california area could probrably be explained by a distorted view out the window.

i probably doubt that most people's cell phones have a dramatic 'end' button, in all caps, just to hang up -just found it a little humorous. but then again, i read this today in one sitting so it may not be as funny as when i first read it.

    a few notes:

below are a few notes i've jotted down while reading. (the page numbers are an estimate of the page location in the e-book, since changing the font size moves words around.)

chapter 5 says 'for mica-topped'(?) actually meant formica-topped. heheh

page 500-505 his name is san francisco? later i find out they're referring to the candidates by where they are from, not necessarily their names.

page 656-660 'the secretary of defense was in the process of crawling up his ass.' funny line unexpectedly read.

page 2609-2613 i'm a bit confused why they said he took off his suit at the foot of the stairs. in the cyberbridge video and in a later description, he was by the bed during that time.

page 3227-3233 says 'wycoff took the lord's name in vain again' huh. can't just say what he actually said, but the story is more graphic in other places. kinda odd to me.

page 3816-3821 'dark saw the dark arts' kinda funny to read when all the light and dark elements clash when trying to describe the moment.

page 4352-4357 cliche nots in a sentence. ::rolls eyes::

the hollywood cemetery is on santa monica, not wilshire.

there's no san martin drive in the anaheim area, probably to add a non-existent element in the locations that might otherwise be visited by curious readers.

one of the best comprehensive books for those just getting into molecular biology. since a lot of time has passed, i'm unsure of the relevancy in future publications.
