I teach AP Lit and freshmen English in an independent boys school, and I seem to spend most of my time grading papers and keeping up with my students' reading assignments. Summer is my time to luxuriate in what I want to read. A trip to China one summer sparked an interest in Chinese literature. I'm always looking for new books to teach! My... more »

Perusing my shelf and getting ideas. Very scary. I'm scattered, to put it in a good light with my reading. I teach Intensive Reading in addition to AP Lit., so I have a lot of YA Lit. on my shelf. While perusing yours I saw the Oz books. I was so excited. I have the hardcovers from when I was little. And I forgot because they're on my daughter's shelf. Thank you!

Another AP Lit teacher here. I just requested you as a friend as I notice that you also have read and love Beloved. Do you teach it in AP Lit? I taught it the first year I taught the course and am planning to do so again this year. I find that it takes a few weeks at least to do it justice, as it is so deep and beautifully written.

    Greetings,

Yeah, the 8th graders are tough, but I keep telling myself that if I really want to make a difference, this is the age that needs it most.

I wanted to inquire about what an "independent boys school" is. I mean I have a general idea, but was wondering.

Also, best of luck on your trip to China. My school has allowed me to go to Italy twice on "class trips" and they were two of the best trips of my life. If China goes well, maybe you could convince your district to send you back with a dozen students.

    Ciao, Michael

Elliott Bay Bookstore, in historic Pioneer Square is a Seattle tradition. A little north of downtown, in the Wallingford neighborhood, is a tiny, unique, all-poetry-all-the-time bookstore called Open Books, A Poem Emporium. Another terrific (used) bookstore is in a funky neighborhood called Fremont: Ophelia's Books.

Hi, Jo I noticed last night that you are in Nashville. Thanks for introducing yourself. I'm excited about Hume-Fogg. My new teaching assignment will be a challenge...going from Lit to Language...but the more I learn the more interesting the course sounds. I know a few of the boys from the school down the road. You have my favorite classes. I like watching the change from freshman to senior.

Your China trip sounds interesting. Do you recommend Dream of the Red Chamber?

    Thanks for the outreach :)

I'm really looking forward to Sligo. How were your seminars? I'm curious about the types of people who attended.

I do love Ireland's West and Northwest. My husband has been many times and we went together in 2004 (along with the Bloomsday centenary in Dublin). I'm southern California born-and-bred, so I missed my sunshine, but I do love the countryside!

Did you visit Michael Quirke's woodcrafting shop by any chance? An amayzing storyteller...
