A pretty useless prequel of the Lynley crew. I couldn't help but think that the author took her character history outlines, fleshed them out, threw in a couple murders and voila....400 plus page novel. It was really hard to get through and if the next Lynley novel doesn't get better, then I'm dropping the series.

I will admit though, the last 100 pages were great. 300 pages of filler as well unfortunately.

As a guy with kids who, when younger, saw Jim's band a few times, I thought this book was great. He and I have a pretty similar philosophy when it comes to parenting and it's good to see that the pains of growing into parenthood weren't unique to me. I laughed my ass off during this, because I've caught myself with a lot of the same thoughts. Great job Jim, good book!

The premise of the mystery itself was absolutely riveting. The look at Lynley's schoolboy roots and his motivation for some actions (and in counterpoint, those of his partner) make for some good background on the characters. The subplot of the personal issues between some of the other characters (the extended Lynley family as I call them) got tedious. Really tedious at times.

This was just ok. A book that used plot to explore characters. The first half was fun in an Agatha Christie sort of way, but the second half just didn't do it for me. Hope this series can bounce back.

Although this book took a bit to get going, it was pretty darn good when it got rolling. George really goes into detail on the history and relations of the characters, and it does tend to get a bit complex at times. The subject matter was a bit rough, especially near the end, but it was absolutely compelling and I was unable to put it down over the last 100 pages.

  • The Lost Daughters of China

This was sort of two books in one. One part dealt with the personal story of a couple looking to adopt a daughter from China. The second part dealt with the history of women in China, reproduction law and Chinese culture. The portions dealing with the adoption portion were a bit overdone, in my opinion. I found the parts not dealing with the actual author of the book to be fascinating. It almost feels that this should have been two different books. I would have been interested in reading a full length on the women in China section.

Hey, I may have to turn in my man card, but I really, really enjoyed this. Cookson does a great job of capturing Victorian England in this historical drama. The story involves an orphaned girl and the ins and outs of growing up a beautiful young (and poor) woman in that day and age. I really found myself caring for the characters and was really happy with the ending. I went in expecting the worst and found the best. It's recommended!

Melodramatic trash of the highest order. The first 150 pages of the book is wrapped up in a subplot that isn't touched on again, it's like the author needed 300 pages and had two 150 page stories, so she combined them. I would be absolutely shocked if this garbage isn't turned into a Lifetime movie at some point.

A PSA for a organization that helps homeless kids get on their feet. The case studies read like an afternoon special. Nothing special, I tore through it in a hour.

This book was great fast paced fun. It reads quick and it's entertaining. Perfect commute or plane ride reading. It shares a couple characters with Morrell's "Creepers", and I think it's the rare case of a sequel that outperforms the original.
