Our local newspaper has a tiny section for "cool websites" to check out and this is one I decided to pull up. I feel as if I hit the jackpot!!! I am a book addict, I must always have a book to read, as well as... more »

We do have a lot in common; my baby girl is 18, and her big sister is 22. They are my best friends, too, and are both prolific readers and writers.
My husband reads, too, but his selections usually have something to do with history, historical trivia, hunting, military history, dogs, Native American history, or the humor of Patrick McManus.. His fiction is usually confined to Stephen King or Dean Koontz. We've been married for almost seven years, and he has been a wonderful husband and stepfather. My girls love him, warts and all.
Start date for the teachers at my school was supposed to be the 20th, but my principal/superintendent surprised us this week with his last-minute decision to schedule a faculty retreat from the 19th through the 22nd. Most of the female staff are unhappy because we're being asked to leave our families and pets for several days and nights, and we have every reason to suspect that the location of the retreat (which is presently undisclosed) has something to do with a great golf course. I'm sure we will have wonderful seminars until around 2 p.m., then we will be released to "bond" (translation: hit the golf course). The Boss has no idea that only one or two of the nine women on staff view shopping as a recreation sport. None of us are golfers.
We've been incorporating more "hands-on" and group activities in our curriculum, so most of our in-service workshops have something to do with brain-based learning.
While I do appreciate the new book scent, I am hopelessly addicted to school supplies. My favorite hangout is at the back of Target with all of the notebook paper, three-ring binders, and lovely unused crayons in packs of 64 or more. I grew up as part of a large family and was generally given boxes of 24 crayons. As a result, I indulge myself and my daughters with the BIG packs. Even now, the girls can usually count on new crayons and coloring books on each holiday and during times of illness. Although I personally cannot stay in the lines, coloring provides stress relief. Every now and then, I find a way to incorporate coloring into school activities.
I do agree with you on the beauty of denial, and I'm a firm believer in not facing the facts.
    Have a great day!

Thank you so much for your reading suggestions for my students! I'll have to see if I can find some of them before school starts. I, too, have two daughters, and the three of us have spent many rainy days with good books. I'd like to extend a love of books to "my kids" at school, but it can be a challenge. This past year, the favorites were Cut, Speak, A Child Called It, Sloppy Firsts, and Dragon's Blood. I'm always open for suggestions for high-interest books. I understand how exciting it is when one of your students suddenly wants to read. One of my girls discovered The Bell Jar last year and suddenly wanted to read more good books. Let me know if you can think of any others to recommend. Good luck in your new school year! When do you go back?
