The profile picture shows a statue of the man my town is named for. If you know who that is, you know where I live.

Learned to read when I was four, and liked it so much I've never stopped. Grew up to be a librarian, which surprised nobody who knew me in school. These days I'm reading mostly history, fantasy, mysteries, and... more »

  • The 50 Greatest Cartoons: As Selected by 1,000 Animation Professionals
    • Rated 4 stars

I've become familiar with editor Jerry Beck as a frequent commentator on the excellent Looney Tunes Golden Collection sets of DVDs. Some of the remarks in this book, written in 1994, sound dated now (especially the part about how computer animation will never replace hand-drawn characters) but the cartoons chosen are brilliantly timeless.

Very thorough discussion of a woman and her book, neither of which I had much familiarity with beforehand.

This second half of what was written as one book not surprisingly picks up exactly where part one left off. Like part one, it kept me up way too late one night, trying to finish it before I went to bed.

  • Reserved For the Cat

Ballet dancer Ninette Dupond goes from triumph to disaster, when she stands in for a suddenly injured ballerina, only to enrage the star with a too-good review. And then her cat starts talking in her mind. It took me longer than it probably should have to identify the classic fairy tale this fantasy novel is based on, but that just means the story holds up on its own, with or without reference to the tale.

A great start to the new series of cozy mysteries by Bowen, featuring Lady Victoria Georgiana Charlotte Eugenie, 34th in line for the throne of England, in 1932 London. Engaging characters and lots of humor add to the appeal.

Sylvan is a very entertaining writer, and very wise about her subject.

I knew very little about Asatru before this, so found the book extremely informative.

Very interesting look at the American authors centered in Concord, Massachusetts in the mid- to late 1800s, including one figure (Margaret Fuller) I hadn't previously heard of.

  • How Not to Be Afraid of Your Own Life
    • Rated 3 stars

A little book on how to meditate and why. I liked the enumeration of different kinds of fear and what to do about them, but I'm not sure it has persuaded me to learn to meditate.

I originally thought this book might be a little TOO simple, but it grew on me as I read more of it and I ended up being really pleased with it.
