Betsy Eubanks

I am a recovering doctoral student in terms of my reading life. For 10 years my reading was directed by academics, and I am still working on getting back to reading for fun which includes not finishing a book if it isn't engaging. My favorites are classic literature, science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, and organizational psychology... more »

Great finish to the series. I like the character/voice switch in the middle section. The characters continued to be people I was interested to know their outcome, although I have no idea how the 4th book would be in movie form...

I finished this out of dogged detemination to know if the world ended or not. Overall, the main character Jed is self obsessed and vulgar. The amount of detail about Mayan stuff is really tiring. I switched eventually to scanning parts because I got bored with the Mayan dates, names, etc. etc. Not sure I would have even finished it if I knew it was the first of a trilogy. Not planning on reading the next book.

Engaging continuation of the series. I am going to read the 4th book, and at this point have no idea who it will end, which provides information about the book. It isn't a canned story, but the themes are classic, challenged romance struggling within imposed, impossible circumstances.

Basic application to businesses of the broken window theory. Focus is often on front-line, visible aspects of business like customer service-- certainly appropriate use of the theory.

  • FREUD, THE MAN AND THE CAUSE

I am not sure in the end what category to place Freud. Certainly, he was driven, and he was creative, but he was an egomaniac as well. You understand more his focus on personality when you consider how focused he was on being great himself. Glad I read it.

I remember reading this and I will have to reread it. Great book.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way -- in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorieis insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only."

I read this book, but then don't remember much of it later. I enjoy it at the time though.

I didn't make any notes at the time, but remember enjoying it.

The first book, The Hobbit, is still my favorite, but the Trilogy is next in line. My orignal copies are beat up, dogeared, with silver paint from when I was painting a shield in high school and reading the books yet again.

My absolutely favorite fantasy book. Bilbo, Gandalf, even Smaug, are characters that will live for generations.
"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."
