I'm a police dispatcher and author of a novel called "Pit-Stop," which just won the 2009 Eppie Award for Best Horror! The next book is "The Hollows," and it's due out Nov. 20. But I love talking all kinds of books with all kinds of readers. Catch me here or find me on myspace, facebook, or twitter!

  • Until It's Over
    • Rated 3 stars

A solid slow-burning thriller. The characters are well-defined, and the ins and outs of a houseful of roommates gives the story some life beyond the standard slasher fare. The story stays compelling throughout, with an interesting twist in the 2nd half - the narration suddenly leaps from the protagonist to the killer. The reveal of the killer is given a good build-up, although I was little disappointed to find that my guess was correct. The climax never got as harrowing as I wanted it to, but it stayed true to the characters, which made it a satisfying experience in the end.

    The Hollows

    by Ben Larken
    • Rated 5 stars

Here's the first review listed on Amazon by CYB:

The Hollows reads like a twilight zone epic. The chapters leave you in suspense. You want to know the connection of the characters..., you keep trying to figure out "the catch" to the "help" that is received. You discover that the truth in the moment is just that..., "the truth in the moment". The story is always evolving. Someone has to be running the show..., or maybe NOT. I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! I CANNOT WAIT TO READ PIT-STOP AND THE SECOND PART TO THE HOLLOWS. There is just no imagining what can happen or what is supposed to happen. In fact I think a re-read is in order...., just so I am sure I understand what I think I understand. It is that intriguing. Ben Larken's imagination is a wondrous thing. It was a pleasure to read The Hollows. You are an awesome writer!

  • Under the Dome
    • Rated 3 stars

King is always fun to get into. Even the worst King novels are easy to get pulled into, and this one is far from the worst. In fact, one of my favorites is Needful Things. King did an awesome job of bringing a whole town to life, making each member of the town a domino on the stage, and then having a hell of a time knocking them all over. This one reminded me of that. There are lots of townies in this one, and many of them are very well written. The little relationships that are touched upon throughout the story made the book for me.

Now the concept of a dome cutting off a whole city from the outside world is an intriguing one, even if The Simpsons did it first. King treats it with a lot of earnestness and believability. My main problem was with the bad guys in the story. Big Jim Rennie and his son are such larger than life bad guys from the beginning, and they pulled me out of the drama several times in the story. I mean, it's one thing that aliens have put a dome over the city. But to have that AND a serial killer with a brain tumor AND a the man in charge of the city running the biggest meth lab in the United States, and it all became a little too much. I would've preferred to have seen some semblance of normal characters that slipped into bad guy mode as the events of the story unfolded. That's what made The Lord of the Flies such a classic, which is obviously what this story aspires to.

But still, the novel is never less than compelling. It's a fun ride that could've been something with a little more depth.

  • Heart-Shaped Box: A Novel
    • Rated 3 stars

At first I thought this book leapt into the heavy haunting a little too quickly. But then I realized this wasn't trying to be a classic haunting tale. This one uses the ghost as a vehicle for a high-octane cat and mouse thriller. And on that front it works. A very quick and fun read.

I always thoroughly enjoy Russo's books. He writes the kind of characters who jump of the page with insight and humor. This one is simply about a man who chairs his college English department and all the stress swirling around him as the college braces for a new round of budget cuts. It doesn't sound like a very intriguing plot, but I found myself turning pages as if it were a thriller. You want to spend time in this character's world and get to know him.

  • A Good and Happy Child

A great horrific mindbender. Is the child demonically possessed or mentally ill? Evans makes a compelling case for both sides, and the end result is a haunting story of a guy who wants to do the right thing no matter what the cost.

  • Just After Sunset

I didn't have time to read all the stories in this collection, but I did read most of them, and really enjoyed several. The best ones involve a jogger who encounters a serial killer on the Florida Keys, a man who is almost murdered by porta-potty, and a wonderfully tender ghost story about a man who survived 9/11.

I only recall one real clunker, called Stationary Bike. It was about a painter who starts riding a stationary bike that takes him biking in a beautiful fantasy countryside. But the spirit of his fat cells (seriously) rebel against his newfound love of exercise.

Still, the collection as a whole is vintage King. I'm one of the ones who really enjoys his later work maybe even more than his early stuff. I love the King classics, but his heart has only gotten bigger with time, and several of these stories truly reflect that.

  • Drood: A Novel
    • Rated 3 stars

Dan Simmons is such a great writer. Even his most off-kilter stories are readable. This one does test that theory a bit. Telling the story of Charles Dickens and Wilky Collins search for the grim reaper-ish title character. The story starts off with a bang, or rather a haunting train wreck. And the first half of the story promises to be a suspense thriller in the same vein as The Historian.

Unfortunately, the second half veers more into the rivlary between Collins and Dickens. Both characters are wonderfully realized and are fascinating to delve into, especially when getting behind-the-scenes peeks into how their lives affected their writing. But Drood remains a promise never fully realized, and late in the game there's an annoying just-a-dream moment that almost takes you out of the story.

The end result is muddled and confusing. I don't mind that the line between reality and fantasy is blurred, but so many threads and plot developments are left for the reader to dissect and figure out which is which.

So it's a misfire, but a fascinating one. And it's certainly not bad enough to keep me from reading the next Simmons offering.

  • Streets of Laredo: Sequel to Lonesome Dove
    • Rated 4 stars

Not as epic as Lonesome Dove, but how many books are? What matters is that the writing is still pitch perfect, and the story is compelling. The characters may not meet the fates you'd like, but they're always true to themselves.

  • The Pleasure of My Company: A Novel
    • Rated 4 stars

I really enjoyed this book. It has the same quiet humor that was in Shopgirl, but I thought Martin used it much better in this one. This is what the movie "As Good As It Gets" should have been--a tender and at times hilariously funny story of a brilliant man with some incredible mental blocks standing in the way of happiness. The way this guy attempts to pick up on romantic signals and react to them is just priceless.
