The writing is beautiful, & sometimes fully metaphorical. Krauss is writing about the concept of love. Though it's starts out being about the love that drives Leopold Gursky's life, it ends up being a chronicle (a history) of different kinds of love all linked to this man. When writing about an abstract concept, especially one as complex as love, it's inevitable that may divergences will occur in order to prove a point or make secondary points to complement the main one. What I mean to say is... Although the reading was at times confusing, I cannot deny that it was beautiful. I enjoyed it very much; but I was a little disappointed with the ending.

This novel is definitely heavier than The Time Traveler's Wife. The development of the Poole sisters (the "Mirror Twins") was rather interesting. My curiosity over what had happened between the Noblin sisters (twins as well) grew throughout the novel, but the answers given towards the last fifth of the novel were unsatisfactory. A lot of tension and curiosity were built up throughout the novel, only to culminate in a confusing, Frankenstein-esque, slightly out-of-place ending. The only character's story conclusion that made any sense was that of Martin & Marijke. Regrettably, I would not recommend this book. Although it was very well written, the plot was poorly executed in the end.

I was disappointed =( It's a sweet novel, & it has a wonderful depiction of that moment when two long lost lovers meet again for the first time after so long, but I liked the movie so much more. I just think that the film breathes so much more life into the characters. The book is a lot more mellow & sorrowful, focusing on the reunion & end of the relationship. I like that the movie showed it all: beginning, separation, reunion & end. It helps you to sympathize with them more.
