I'm an elementary school teacher (3rd grade currently) living in Katy, TX. As such, I frequently find my bedside table staggering under the weight of a mountain of children's book. This is not a concern for me though, as I love the optimism and meaningful themes found in children's and young adult fiction. :) I'm working on my master's degree... more »

Excellent novel for children grades 3-8! Contains (criminal) action and adventure for readers who enjoy a thrill and also has a starring role for an animal (for animal lovers).

Casino Royale is the first of the Bond novels. Portions of the book are a bit didactic, but the development of the 007 persona is exactly what one would expect having seen the movies.

  • Mockingjay

Mockingjay was my least favorite book of the trilogy. Many of the characters I enjoyed in the previous novels are psychologically damaged in this final installment and I found myself missing the people I'd grown to love. The conclusion is also less than satisfactory, as it leaves many political questions unanswered, not to mention a heart-wrenching death toll. Despite my disappointment, it is a necessary read if one has completed the first two books.

In this second novel in The Hunger Games Trilogy, the rebellion is underway. Katniss has unknowingly become the symbol for the rebellion and struggles to balance her feelings for all of the people she loves. In a surprising turn of events, she is cast back into the Hunger Games arena and continues to fight to save the ones she loves. Slowly, she begins to identify her place in her swiftly changing world. Even darker and more disturbing than the first, but once again a page-turner. The ending leaves readers with many unresolved concerns, carrying the energy from this book into the final installment.

  • The Hunger Games

In this dystopian novel, Suzanne Collins explores the nature of humanity and the lengths to which people will go to destroy and control each other. Katniss, is a 16 year old girl living on the outskirts of Panem, a country that arose from the destruction of the United States. She volunteers for the Hunger Games to save her sister's life, and unknowingly sparks a rebellion. The characters are well developed and memorable, though Katniss's obliviousness to the underlying meaning of some events can be aggravating. Fast paced, action oriented writing. It is a horrifying novel that I simply could not put down!

Creswell makes writing research a joy. The book serves as a recipe for writing a thesis, dissertation, or research proposal. It also includes lists of additional sources to support the research writing process.

Provides excellent descriptions of how to teach students to talk about what they read so that deeper understanding can be attained. Quick and easy read. Practices supported by research, but filled with descriptions of classroom scenarios.

Kevin Henkes is one of my favorite authors and I can closely relate to the main character in this book. In short, it is about a mouse who worries about everything until she meets a friend and realizes that worrying isn't as necessary as she thought. A classic read aloud for those first, worrisome days of school.
