I've always loved to read, though my book-reading has slowed considerably since I discovered livejournal and do so much reading & writing there ( http://belenen.livejournal.com ). My favorite genres are sci-fi/fantasy, historical fiction (esp. ancient Egypt), autobiographies, spiritual non-fiction, and equalist non-fiction (particularly on the subjects of anti-sexism, anti-racism, anti-porn, and anti-gender).
I looooooove to shop at used book stores, which is why my plan-to-read shelf is so large -- I hunt around on Amazon for reviews of novels I might like and then take note of the authors and find them locally, if I can. (I also just grab things that jump out at me) I'm scarcely ever willing to pay more than $6 for a book, so that affects the way I collect ;-)
I just recently discovered Joan Slonczewski's A Door Into Ocean and it deeply changed me in more than one way -- quite a feat for a sci-fi novel! In addition to Joan, my current favorite authors are: Pauline Gedge, Stephen Leigh, Tanith Lee, Michael J. Roads, Sharon Shinn, Robert Jensen, Judith Tarr, Peter Tompkins, Torey Hayden, Dr. Melvin Morse, Betty Eadie, & Alan Dean Foster.
