i have some books.

i have a rule that i can only have 2 unread books in my possession at anytime. so i go to the store only as i'm finishing a book. its a great a rule because half finished and unread books no longer accumulate by the 100's as they used to.

its a bit of a handful. the monotony of the mood of the protagonist dino is intriguing. i think we have all acted in his way in our lives. obsessing over our love/boredom for something that we can and then cannot live with or without. in his case a beautiful portrait model as he tries to ignore his rich mother's advice.

this book is two short - by miller standards - pieces about meeting a woman. as you know meeting a woman is a loaded and heated event for miller loaded with descriptive words rarely seen in print. i think these pieces, which were re-written by miller in 1956 have a cleaner dialog structure than his earlier work and lend themselves to an easier read - its lighter. i love the challenge of miller but sometimes realize that after 10 pages on one paragraph, the already freely expounding prose to be more difficult on to read - this book is like a refreshing snippet of his denser work.

although its considered a companion to tropic of cancer i found this to be a much deeper ride. the explorations into childhood memories is a marked difference and the philosophical rants are much more mature. i felt a little lost at the end but i think this was because i wished it would go on forever.

i love that at page 78 there is a chapter like break in the text with a large cap on the following page and then nothing similar for the remaining 270 pages.

this book is magnificent. i love this statement on the human condition where we watch malachi constant and beatrice roomsford operating their lives based on the belief/disbelief in winston niles roomsford's special ability to see the future - especially when he is prone to telling white lies about *exactly* what is going to happen. its a sick story and a wonderful lush read. almost a sci-fi book of job. it is certainly up there with cat's cradle all the way.

this was a really pleasant surprise. i was amidst a run of henry miller and kurt vonnegut when i had finished a book and had nothing to read and a late train to catch. picked it up at a newstand for all the wrong reasons - i liked the title and thought the author was beautiful. it flowed well for right from the last page of sexus. its dense enough in the details and light enough in the flow of events to keep me there. very well written in today's world. the ending felt a bit rushed in its unraveling but good none-the-less. i agree with the 'secret history' comparisons but its not a rip-off as much as a prep-school-inner-circle-people-die genre of story.

its not a happy tale. pain suffering addiction prison life. its so well written that you sweat and bleed the anger and heartache but it takes its toll on you.

oddly my first henry miller read was one published after his death. it overlaps some of the rosy crucifixion period when henry's wife was having a lesbian affair. its a lot of pain and emotional suffering jealousy and what not, its a good read but not as fluid as the other millers.

my first vonnegut believe it or not. what an amazing ride and a brilliant way to hand hold your mind through the tragedy of the bombing of dresden not to mention the trauma of war on the individual's psyche.
